National Institute of Aerospace

National Institute of Aerospace NIA was formed by a consortium of leading research universities.

NIA is a non-profit research and graduate education institute created to conduct leading-edge aerospace and atmospheric research, develop new technologies for the nation and help inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. Members include: Georgia Tech, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, the University of Maryland, the University

of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, the College of William & Mary and the AIAA Foundation. NIA serves as a strategic partner with NASA Langley Research Center and the aerospace community to enable research creativity and expand technology development opportunities. The Institute integrates research and graduate education while creating new government/academia/industry partnerships to solve tomorrow's problems today. The purpose of NIA is to:

Foster research collaboration among national laboratories, academia and industrial partners to stimulate innovation and creativity
Provide comprehensive graduate and continuing education in science and engineering via local campus presence and distance learning technologies
Incubate and stimulate the commercialization of new intellectual property developed through NIA's research activities
Promote aerospace science and engineering and provide outreach to the region and nation

The 2024 RASC-AL Competition is Now Open for Proposals!

NASA’s Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts – Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) Competition is seeking new concepts that leverage innovation to improve our ability to operate on the Moon, Mars and beyond. Collegiate-level teams and their faculty advisors are invited to propose innovative solutions in response to one of the following four themes: Long Duration Mars Simulation at the Moon, Sustained Lunar Evolution, AI-Powered Self Replicating Probes - an Evolutionary Approach, and Large Scale Lunar Crater Prospector.

Now open for proposals: NASA's 2024 Gateway to Blue Skies Competition - Advancing Aviation for Natural Disasters!

The 2024 Gateways to Blue Skies Competition is seeking proposals for aviation-related systems that can aid in natural disaster management. Up to eight finalist university teams will receive $8,000 to continue their research and present at the Gateways to Blue Skies Forum in May 2024 at NASA Ames Research Center. Forum winners will receive an opportunity to intern with NASA Aeronautics in the academic year following the event.
