As founder and Chairman of the College Republicans of Thomas Nelson Community College, I wholeheartedly support the College Republican Federation Of Virginia's resolution condemning the actions of a gathering of self-identified white-supremacists, white nationalists, and neo-nazis.
The "Unite the Right" was organized by those who claim to call our party home. However, as Republicans, we ought to be as clear as day on this issue. That is why I unequivocally condemn the ideologies of the Ku Klux Klan, White-Supremacists, White-Nationalists, Neo-Nazis, and of anyone who went to Charlottesville to perpetuate violence of any sort, including various groups of counter-protesters. Anyone who condones racial supremacy or superiority or ethnic nationalism does not represent College Republicans, nor do they represent the growing electorate within the Republican Party. For these reasons, they should have no place in our Party to spread their hate and spew their venom.
It is in times like these that we need sound leadership, from all leaders in our party. It is in times that I am reminded of why I am a Republican. It is also in times like these that I am reminded of one of my favourite quotes that keep me firmly grounded in principle, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing."
Let us also be clear, and show the Americans and the nation who we really are. This is why on the 16th day of August, I mirrored our governing organization, The College Republican National Committee's statement into my proposed amendment for the College Republican Federation Of Virginia's resolution. Although my amendment never made the final resolution, it is important that I share it here. Please see the amendment that I proposed on August 16th below.
WHEREAS: The Executive Board of the College Republican Federation of Virginia, and its affiliated chapters, calls on leaders in our organization and our statewide party who may support or condone the events in Charlottesville, Virginia or find themselves in agreement with the ideologies of White-Supremacists, Neo-Nazis, White-Nationalists or any ideology which holds any race, religion, nationalities, ethnicities or persons of various sexual identities inferior, to resign immediately.
We send our thoughts and prayers to the families of Heather Heyer, Lt. Jay Cullen & Trooper-Pilot Berke Bates, who tragically lost their lives that day.
Sincerely,
Owen Haughton Jr.
