Last month we had help from our younger generations with stocking some of our local waterways with Trout. The Trustees have historically stocked Brook Trout in eleven freshwater bodies to promote and preserve Recreational freshwater fishing in Southampton Town. According to the Southampton town code, only residents, freeholders and taxpayers may take fish from bodies of fresh water in the Town of Southampton.

🚨 ADDITIONAL SHINNECOCK CLOSURE 🚨
As of today, May 5th, Shinnecock Bay and its tributaries lying west of Ponquogue Bridge are closed.
This action is taken as a precaution to protect public health due to the presence of marine biotoxins in shellfish and the potential presence in carnivorous gastropods which feed on shellfish.🦪 These areas will remained closed to all recreational and commercial harvesters until a determination is made that marine biotoxins are no longer present at levels that may make shellfish and carnivorous gastropods hazardous for use as food.    Information about temporary closures and re-openings will be available on a recorded message available at: 631-444-0480 and the DEC website at: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/7765.html

🦪 Peconic Estuary Partnership has approached the Trustees with a project to remove an existing bulkhead on Trustee property in Cold Spring Pond in their effort to reduce hardened shoreline structures. They are planning to hire an engineer to determine the next best step in this process. The Trustees are holding a public hearing about this project and we would love to hear from the you, the public, about what access looks like at this location. Please join our Public Hearing on Monday May 4th at our Regular Meeting at 1pm to voice your ideas about how we can best serve our community at this popular recreational shellfish site.

Spring is a busy time of year for our Marine Maintenance crew! When they aren’t busy putting in navigational aids in preparation for boating season they are doing things like fixing osprey nesting poles (like this one) or installing kayak racks at local beaches. A big thanks to Tim, Steve, Bob and Kevin for doing the hard work so we all can get out and safely enjoy the waterways! 💪

🦪 🚫Marine Biotoxin Closure- Shinnecock Bay🚫 🦪
Western Shinnecock Bay is closed effective Today, Wednesday April 8th, 2026 due to the presence of Saxotoxin. Saxotoxin causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning and cannot be removed through cooking and is monitoring in waterways by the DEC. The following areas are closed to Shellfishing and collection of Carnivorous Gastropods (Conchs, Whelks, Moonsnails). This is a common occurrence during the Spring and the Trustees recommend that anyone with a Trustee Shellfishing permit (recreational or commercial) register with the DEC to receive important closure updates. You can call the DEC division of Marine Resources message line for current updates at (631) 444-0480.

The have declared the masses of bird carcasses on our shorelines an environmental emergency so we could quickly attend to the hundreds of dead birds in a safe and efficient manor. To be clear, the Town of Southampton has not declared a state of emergency for public health reasons. A big thank you to and for covering this story and highlighting the hard work of the Trustees office and an even bigger thank you to all of our staff that are fielding calls from concerned constituents and our Marine Maintenance crew and Marine Patrol for being our boots on the ground, we are forever grateful to have such a great group of dedicated employees that puts our community’s needs first.

🦆 ⚠️ AVIAN FLU 🦆 ⚠️ The snow and ice this winter has created limited open water and grazing areas for our wild birds creating a perfect environment for the spread of the ‘Bird Flu’. If you see any dead or sick birds please keep your distance and keep pets away from them. It spreads primarily among birds but can potentially infect humans or pets.

While the bays and ponds may be frozen with these cold winter temps, please be vigilant with checking the safety of the ice. Our salt water bays may look flat and safe but there will be varying thicknesses and stability due to currents and tides. Fresh water ponds can have springs that also produce currents and decrease the integrity of the ice. Please take precautions when enjoying your winter outdoor activities and stay safe!
