County Executive Dennis Levinson has announced 12 public clinics where residents 18 years and older can receive a free flu vaccination to help protect themselves and others from contracting and spreading the seasonal influenza virus.

The clinics, provided by the Atlantic County Division of Public Health, will be held at various locations throughout the county beginning September 17 through October 6. No appointment is needed.

“The type and severity of flu viruses may vary from year to year, but a flu shot still offers the best protection against infection,” stated Levinson. “The vaccine does not guarantee you will not get sick, but it does help lessen the severity and duration of the illness and may reduce the likelihood of hospitalization or death.”

This year’s flu vaccine has been updated to protect against three new virus strains.

In the U.S., flu viruses typically circulate between October and May. Because it may take up to two weeks for the flu antibodies to develop in your body, the sooner you get a flu shot the better. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends getting an annual flu shot before the end of October to help build a strong defense before illness peaks.

Flu symptoms tend to appear within one to four days after infection and may include fever of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, chills, body aches, fatigue, nausea and diarrhea. Adults age 65 and older and children under age 5 are at greater risk for developing serious flu complications as well as individuals with chronic health conditions, such as kidney disease, asthma, diabetes, and heart disease.

Residents can help reduce the spread of germs by washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home if sick, routinely cleaning common touch items and surfaces, and limiting contact with those infected.

A complete list of clinic dates, times and locations is available at atlanticcountynj.gov/flu

“Help protect yourself and others by getting a flu shot,” said Levinson. “It’s quick, easy and free!”

Pediatric flu vaccinations are available in Northfield and Hammonton. Appointment is required. Please call 609-645-5933 for details.

đź’§The regular maintenance of Hammonton fire hydrants will begin this week to maintain a safe and reliable water system.

During this process, water is pushed through fire hydrants at high velocity to remove sediment, minerals, and buildup from the water mains. This helps improve water quality, maintain proper pressure, and ensure hydrants are ready for emergency use.

While flushing is taking place, you may notice temporary discoloration in your water, often appearing yellow, brown, or rusty. This is caused by harmless mineral deposits, like iron and manganese, being stirred up in the pipes.

If you experience discolored water, simply run your cold water for a few minutes, usually from a faucet or hose, until it clears. It’s also a good idea to avoid doing laundry during this time, as the discolored water could stain clothing.

We thank you for your understanding and patience on behalf of the Hammonton Public Utilities Department. Water customers with questions or concerns can call 609-567-4331, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. or visit https://www.townofhammonton.org/municipal-utilities/

Recently, if you've passed by the 4th Street Water Tower in Hammonton, you may have spotted an interesting new feature atop it. This summer, workers installed a roof corral, a unique ring affixed to the dome that is specifically designed to securely hold and arrange telecommunications antennas. This enhancement not only tidies up the appearance but also significantly improves local wireless service and enhances emergency broadcast capabilities throughout the area.
