This past week, our 100% volunteer fire department participated in a training at the Hammonton Municipal Airport, home of SouthSTAR, the New Jersey State Police Air Medical helicopter that serves our region.

The training provided members with an overview of the state’s air medical program, helicopter familiarization, landing zone operations, and the responsibilities of the fire department during helicopter landings. Members also had the opportunity to review and test communications equipment used to coordinate air medical responses.

Training opportunities like these help ensure our firefighters are prepared to safely and effectively support air medical operations when every second counts.

Alternative fuels are rapidly becoming a core component of modern transportation, with electrified vehicles expanding across highways, rail systems, and personal mobility. At the same time, high-pressure gas systems, cryogenic fuels, and emerging energy sources such as hydrogen, ammonia, and ether-based fuels are increasingly integrated into transit and fleet operations.

In Hammonton, we continue to prioritize preparedness for these evolving risks. This past week, Chief Sean Macri attended the AFFIRM course in Colorado, a five-day program focused on responding to these incidents. Ongoing training is essential for fire officers—particularly chief officers—to remain current on emerging hazards and to model strong leadership for their crews.

Our members’ reach is not limited to Hammonton. The Hammonton Fire Department has two members who also serve on the Atlantic County Search and Rescue (SAR) Team. The team operates under the County’s Office of Emergency Management and deploys to locate missing persons, assist in disaster recovery efforts, and conduct searches in wilderness, urban, and disaster environments.

Hammonton’s members are 1st Lt. Joe Lizza and Firefighter Justin Day. Both participate in monthly drills and training exercises alongside the full SAR team to maintain readiness for deployments and emergency operations.

Volunteerism Is Still Strong In Hammonton!

Recent coverage has focused on the challenges facing volunteer fire departments, but that is only part of the story. Across the country, many volunteer and combination departments continue to grow, adapt, and thrive.

Here in Hammonton Fire Department, we continue to welcome new members, but even more importantly, we are retaining them. That retention has translated into meaningful, sustained growth within our department.

That success is not accidental. It reflects a culture built on opportunity, training, mentorship, and pride in serving both the department and the community. Those values help members develop skills, confidence, and leadership abilities they may never have imagined possible.

Our department continues to grow not only in numbers, but also in capability—expanding our fire suppression, rescue, and water operations to better serve the community.

It’s not without its challenges, but in Hammonton we along with our elected leaders are actively working to address them and remain a strong, efficient, and reliable public safety organization.

Successful volunteer fire departments are able to provide an exceptional level of service at a fraction of the cost of a combination or fully career-staffed system, which would significantly increase taxpayer expenses when staffing, benefits, and infrastructure are taken into account.

Volunteerism is not dead in Hammonton—it continues to make a meaningful difference every single day within the fire department, as well as throughout the community and civic organizations.

A new study on volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention takes a closer look at how training structures, requirements, and delivery methods impact departments. The findings confirm that training plays a critical role in both attracting and retaining volunteers, while also challenging the assumption that training hours alone are the primary barrier. Instead, the study found that the way training is delivered, the flexibility offered, and how well it fits into volunteers’ lives are what make the greatest difference.

The Hammonton Fire Department has been successful in recruiting and retaining volunteers because of its strong focus on continuous training, positive culture, and shared commitment to serving the community. While these should always be priorities, that is not always the reality for many volunteer fire organizations across the country.
