This evening, firefighters conducted vehicle extrication training utilizing our Holmatro, Paratech, and Milwaukee rescue tools. The training focused on several less common scenarios, providing members with the opportunity to discuss potential strategies, evaluate available options, and practice different techniques in a controlled environment. These hands-on exercises help strengthen problem-solving skills and ensure our crews remain prepared for a wide range of rescue situations. Thank you to Captain Kelly for coordinating.

Earlier this morning, members volunteered their Sunday at the Hammonton Municipal Airport to participate in an aviation water salute honoring the retirement Sgt. First Class Harper, a pilot with the New Jersey State Police’s SouthSTAR air medical helicopter program.

The water salute recognized Sgt. First Class Harper’s dedicated service and contributions to emergency medical aviation throughout New Jersey. We were honored to assist in this special event and extend our congratulations and best wishes on a well-deserved retirement. 🚁💦🚒

Leadership from the Hammonton Fire Department, Hammonton Police Department, Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office, Hammonton Office of Emergency Management, and AtlantiCare were invited to NJM Insurance Group for dinner, followed by facility tours tailored to our respective operational areas and discussions on emergency capabilities and preparedness planning.

These collaborative engagements strengthen coordination across agencies and enhance our collective ability to provide effective service and response to the community.

On this Memorial Day we must remember that we enjoy freedoms today because generations before us planted trees whose shade they knew they may never sit beneath.

The Hammonton Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. along Bellevue Avenue, with the ceremony immediately following at Veterans Park.

Our members’ reach is not limited to Hammonton. The Hammonton Fire Department has two members who also serve on the Atlantic County Search and Rescue (SAR) Team. The team operates under the County’s Office of Emergency Management and deploys to locate missing persons, assist in disaster recovery efforts, and conduct searches in wilderness, urban, and disaster environments.

Hammonton’s members are 1st Lt. Joe Lizza and Firefighter Justin Day. Both participate in monthly drills and training exercises alongside the full SAR team to maintain readiness for deployments and emergency operations.

A new study on volunteer firefighter recruitment and retention takes a closer look at how training structures, requirements, and delivery methods impact departments. The findings confirm that training plays a critical role in both attracting and retaining volunteers, while also challenging the assumption that training hours alone are the primary barrier. Instead, the study found that the way training is delivered, the flexibility offered, and how well it fits into volunteers’ lives are what make the greatest difference.

The Hammonton Fire Department has been successful in recruiting and retaining volunteers because of its strong focus on continuous training, positive culture, and shared commitment to serving the community. While these should always be priorities, that is not always the reality for many volunteer fire organizations across the country.
