In 1894 during the Pullman Strike an estimated 34 workers were killed by Federal Troops. In response to the outrage of workers the U.S. Government declared the first Monday in September to be a federal holiday honoring all workers. It became Labor Day.

The working class struggle continues today, as union busting tactics intensify. Instead of physical violence companies like British Petroleum (BP) exert economic violence against their own workers. Our union family at USW Local 7-1 has been locked out by BP for nearly 6 months. Not over pay, but over job security and safe operations of the Whiting Refinery. This power grab is putting working families in distress and our communities in danger.

Unions have led the charge for workers rights. That struggle created a thriving middle class and raised the standard of living of all workers. This is cause that I will continue to champion, when elected to the Indiana State Senate, to represent District 1.

I am humbled by the support shown and given to our people-powered campaign. On Thursday, we hosted "Labor in Politics" at Andorra Banquets and Catering in Schererville, with over 150 guests attending to hear from the leaders who are fighting for working class people like you and I.

Our people-powered movement is hitting the pavement on Labor Day, for the Lowell Labor Day Parade. Put on your Scott4Senate shirt and walking shoes and join us!

We'll be walking with UAW Local 551 Union Hall. Staging begins at 8:30, and the parade starts at 10 AM, on Monday, September 7th.

We are excited to welcome in UAW International Union President Shawn Fain, and USW 7-1 President Eric Schultz to Andorra Banquets and Catering, today at 4 PM, for "Labor in Politics."
