CHEMICAL EMERGENCY
At approximately 9:54am, the Hammond Fire Department was dispatched to a chemical emergency at 711 Blackburn Rd. Upon arrival we found that a small chlorine leak was present from a cylinder located near the water tower. The Hammond Fire Department quickly isolated the immediate area and utilize air monitoring to determine the extent of the release. No chlorine gas was detected offsite by air monitoring however a decision was made to “shelter in place” residents downwind of the incident. The Hammond Fire Dept worked with the Tangipahoa parish office of emergency preparedness to notify residence of the shelter in place order as well as utilizing social media. The Hammond Police Department was also key in securing the incident location and blocking off the roadways. Teams of hazmat technicians from the Hammond Fire Department made entry into the site and isolated the leak. Air monitoring was continuously done throughout the entire incident to ensure that the public was protected. After completely stopping the leak air monitoring was done near the cylinder, and there was no chlorine detected. The decision was made to lift the shelter in place order. All Hammond Fire units returned to service. No injuries were reported.
