Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. is excited to announce a new opportunity for residents to connect with him directly!

In addition to Mayor’s Night Out, which is held throughout the year in each of Hammond’s six council districts, a Virtual Morning with Mayor Tom will stream live every other Friday at 10:30 AM on the Go Hammond page and the City of Hammond’s YouTube channel.

This will allow residents to receive updates, ask questions, and learn about all the great things happening in Hammond from anywhere using their phone, computer, or other electronic device!

The first Virtual Morning with Mayor Tom is happening TOMORROW, Friday, September 4th, at 10:30 AM. Bring your questions, come ready to learn, and share this new opportunity with other Hammond residents who may be interested!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR HAMMOND RESIDENTS WHOSE HOME ELECTRICAL SERVICE WAS DAMAGED BY THE RECENT STORM:

As power restoration efforts continue following the recent storm, the City of Hammond would like to remind residents of the following requirements if their home’s electrical service was damaged:

WHAT RESIDENTS WITH ELECTRICAL DAMAGE NEED TO DO:

1. Hire a City of Hammond-licensed electrical contractor to complete the necessary repairs.

2. Have the repairs inspected and approved by the City of Hammond Electrical Inspector. This inspection must be completed before NIPSCO can restore electrical service.

3. Once the repairs have been approved, contact NIPSCO at 1-800-464-7726 to arrange for your service to be restored.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EQUIPMENT?

Property owner: Damage to the weatherhead, service entrance equipment, conduit, wiring, and meter box/base is generally the property owner’s responsibility to repair.

NIPSCO: NIPSCO is responsible for the service drop running from the utility pole to the weatherhead and for the electric meter itself.

Residents with a NIPSCO Service Partners Home Protection Plan that includes electric-line coverage should contact the plan administrator to determine whether their repair is covered.

For your safety, do not attempt to reconnect or repair damaged electrical service equipment yourself. Use a City of Hammond-licensed electrical contractor and make sure the required City inspection is completed so NIPSCO can safely restore your service.

If you see a downed power line, stay away from it and immediately call 911 and NIPSCO at 1-800-464-7726.

We know many Hammond residents are working to recover from significant storm damage, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as our community continues the recovery process.

As residents and business owners continue repairing their homes and properties following last week’s storm, the City of Hammond is sharing its list of licensed contractors to help residents quickly find qualified professionals and avoid potential scams. The list includes each contractor’s phone number and the type of work they perform.

As everyone is aware on August 11, 2026, the City of Hammond was in the direct path of a storm that can only be described as catastrophic and unprecedented. While the rest of the City services has been doing their part in clearing streets and alleys from the damage it created, it's now Inspections turn to provide some help and advice to our residents.

This has already been a horrible situation for so many, we do not want to see anyone make it worse when they are selecting a contractor for repairs on their property. When major events like this occur it is often followed up by unscrupulous contractors who will try to take advantage of residents.

If your house or electric service was damaged please make sure to check into any contractor you consider hiring, even if sent by your insurance company, to make sure they are licensed, bonded and insured with the City of Hammond. If someone just shows up at your doorstep that you didn't call for an estimate that's probably a good sign that you have someone chasing the storm.
