HAMMOND CITY HALL CLOSING DUE TO EXTREME WEATHER

Hammond Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. has announced that due to the extreme cold temperatures and wind chills expected, Hammond City Hall and non-emergency city offices will be closed Wednesday, January 30th. Garbage and Recycling will be delayed by one day this week.

Anyone experiencing cold related issues may call 911 or go to the Hammond Police station at 504 Douglas Street. Please do not go to the police station for accident reports and such as their civilian staff will not be working.

The Jean Shepherd Center and Lost Marsh Golf Course Clubhouse will be opened 7 a.m. until 9: p.m. as warming shelters. Hours can be extended in emergency situations due to loss of power or fire damage.

“I cannot stress this enough, please look in on your neighbors especially senior citizens during this extreme cold and bring your pets inside”, stated Mayor McDermott.

Here are a few tips for coping with extreme cold weather conditions from the Hammond Police Department. Please note that no administrative services such as records, gun permits, etc. will be available on Wednesday, January 30th due to weather.

· Stay inside unless it is absolutely necessary to go outdoors.
· If possible, run a small stream of water from a home faucet to help prevent pipes from freezing.
· Do not use an oven, or ANY device that is not designed as a heater, as a heat source. Be very careful to monitor space heaters and keep the area around them free.
· Check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly.
· Make sure to cover as much of your heads, face, and hands as possible while outside.
· Breathing through a scarf will warm the air before it enters your lungs.
· Wear several layers of lightweight clothing because the air between the garments acts as insulation to keep the body warmer.
· If you are elderly, keep in touch with family and friends so they know you are safe. If you have family, friends, or neighbors who are elderly, check on them frequently.
· If anyone comes to your door stating they need to check your furnace or threatens that your utilities may be shut off, call 911 immediately. Occasionally, utility workers are present in communities doing repairs. However, a legitimate utility worker, such as someone from NIPSCO, will never mind the police verifying their identity for the safety of their customers.

The Veterans Appreciation Day Parade is tomorrow at 10am. Head to gohammond.com for the route at details. The city is also collecting items to send to troops. You can bring these items to the parade or drop them off at the Hammond Civic Center until Nov. 30th.

The Veteran Appreciation Day Committee is requesting donations for deployed military personnel in conjunction with the Veteran Appreciation Day Parade.

In conjunction with their Veterans Appreciation Day Parade, Go Hammond is collecting items to send overseas to the troops. If you know of a Hammond resident (or relative of a Hammond resident) who is stationed overseas please contact Donna at [email protected].
Donations can be dropped off at the Hammond Civic Center until Nov. 30 or at the Veterans Appreciation Day Parade on Nov. 10th. Head out to the parade and sign thank you banners for each branch of the military. These will accompany the items overseas.
