๐Ÿšจ Hamlin Police Department โ€“ Critical Incident Notification

At approximately 12:50 a.m. this morning, Hamlin Police Department officers were notified of shots fired in the 500 block of Avenue J.

An officer who was already in the area reported hearing approximately 15 gunshots, followed a few minutes later by another series of approximately 15 shots. Based on the sound and pattern, the officer indicated the shots appeared to come from a semi-automatic rifle.

The officer immediately requested assistance from the Jones County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Anson Police Department, and Stamford Police Department. Officers responded and began securing the area. Avenue J was shut down while officers conducted a search of the surrounding area.

During this incident, several citizens left the safety of their homes and some were carrying fi****ms. We understand that community members often want to help, however this adds to the chaos while officers are actively trying to determine who is involved and who is not. This places both our citizens and responding officers in a dangerous position.

We ask residents that during critical incidents please remain inside your home and allow law enforcement to handle the situation.

At this time, investigators have identified persons of interest and the investigation is ongoing.

Conduct of this nature puts our citizens and our community at risk. Shooting fi****ms into the air is not safe. The projectile must come down. A bullet fired upward can reach heights of up to two miles, and depending on the angle, can return to earth with enough speed to cause serious injury or pe*****te the skull.

If you have any information about this incident, or have camera footage from the area, please contact the Hamlin Police Department at 325-576-3633.

We appreciate the assistance of the Jones County Sheriffโ€™s Office, Anson Police Department, and Stamford Police Department.

Updates will be provided as they become available.

๐Ÿ”ง Lock sheds and garages โ€“ Tools, lawn equipment, and bicycles are common targets.

๐Ÿ‘€ Be aware of suspicious activity โ€“ If you see something that doesnโ€™t seem right, report it.

๐Ÿค Look out for your neighbors โ€“ Strong communities help prevent crime. If you are traveling, consider asking a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your property.

Make sure you have serial numbers of your valuable possessions.
