The people of Hamlet worked hard, but they also enjoyed their leisure activities and entertainment. On October 21-26, 1907, the large Saint Louis Attraction Company brought its street carnival to Hamlet. It set up on the west side of Raleigh Street between the tracks and Charlotte Street and featured the big top, plus many side shows under colorful, striped tents....

An early photo showing a demonstration of breaking a mule by Bob Williams and some of his employees for the people of town. Bob Williams is the contractor who built the Seaboard Air Line Hotel. Notice the fire truck on the left. It was probably Hamlet's first motor-driven fire truck......

These were some of the people gathered at the new Woman's Club clubhouse back in 1954 to plant and beautify the yard. From left: Mrs. J.B. Williams, Mrs. David Adeimy, Mrs.O.D. Blackwell, James R. Barbour and Mrs. E.L. Cook. Notice the women are all in dresses or skirts and blouses to do yard work. Those days are gone forever....

The Terminal Hotel opened for business on January 1, 1912 on the east end of Main Street. It was built by the Hamlet Hotel Company with J.L. Lank as manager. A newspaper article stated that “with the addition of the Terminal, it places Hamlet among the first-class hotel towns in the South.” The hotel had forty-two guest rooms, steam heat, hot and cold water, and a telephone in every room. The hotel had a café in conjunction with the dining room and was located near the passenger station and the Main Street business district. In later years it was owned by Jake Covington of Hamlet and was central in the making of the movie BILLY BATHGATE, starring Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman, that was filmed on Main Street in 1990. Sadly, the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1993.

An early postcard showing a southbound passenger train stopped to unload and reload, one of many passenger trains that came through Hamlet back then. You can see part of the Seaboard Air Line Hotel on the left and some of the storefronts that were on Railroad Street over the top of the train cars.....
