Every name on the Butler County Veterans Memorial represents a life given in service to our nation and a family forever changed by sacrifice.

This memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the 747 Butler County service members who left for war and never returned home. It is a place for reflection, remembrance, and gratitude from a community that will never forget.

We invite the community to take a moment to watch, reflect, and remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Memorial Day is more than the start of summer. It is a time to remember those who never came home, the families who carry their loss, and the freedoms preserved through their sacrifice.

As we gather with family and friends this weekend, may we also take a moment to reflect with gratitude and remembrance.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Throughout the month of May, MetroParks of Butler County is doing a weekly series sharing information about veterans buried at our historic cemeteries in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.

As part of our America 250 series, this week we’re honoring John Line, a Revolutionary War veteran laid to rest at the Fairfield Baptist Church/Line-Schafer Farm Cemetery at Line Hill Mound MetroPark.

Born in Essex, New Jersey in 1764, John Line served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the New Jersey State Militia for nine months under Captain Craig and Major Hays. It is possible that their company saw action around Newark, New Jersey during 1782. He later married his wife, Sarah, and together they had a son named John Enyart.

Line eventually settled in Butler County, where he became part of the area’s early history and community. He passed away in Hamilton, Ohio in 1843. Preserving these historic cemeteries is vitally important to ensure that the stories of Butler County’s earliest residents and veterans continue to be remembered for generations to come. You can see John Line's grave, along with a few other early pioneers and veterans in Butler County at Line Hill Mound MetroPark!
