Hamel Volunteer Fire Department

Hamel Volunteer Fire Department Hamel Volunteer Fire Department We are members of the Madison County Fireman's Assn. and the Illinois Assn. of Firefighters.

We proudly serve the Hamel Fire Protection District, a mostly rural area covering approx 50 sq miles and home to more than 3500 residents. Our current Public Protection Classification, as determined by ISO, is 5/5y. Within the district, there are three state highways and 10 miles of Interstate Highway. We respond to a multitude of incidents from structure fires to motor vehicle accidents to hazard

ous material incidents to general service calls, averaging just over 200 calls for service per year. We are a 100% volunteer department composed of 26 firefighters led by Fire Chief Chris Johnson with over 15 years of experience in the fire service. We are commanded by a Fire Chief, two Assistant Chiefs, two Captains, and two Lieutenants. Our governing body is made up of three Trustees appointed to four year terms. We are a progressive department, training on tasks such as wilderness search and rescue and extensive vehicle extrication training. We have modern equipment, including the latest extrication and rescue equipment. Over 75% of our calls, as with most fire departments, are EMS and Rescue.

We are proud to announce that our department has been awarded a $25,000 Small Equipment Grant from the Illinois State Fire Marshal for the purchase of turnout gear. These funds will go to great use to help keep our firefighters safe. Thank you to the State Fire Marshal for selecting our department and thank you to Assistant Chief Bloemker on his work on drafting our submission.

Today, a Hamel resident’s quick thinking made the ultimate difference. When someone faced a medical emergency, this individual immediately jumped in with Hands-Only CPR.

Their fast response bought the vital time needed for medical professionals to arrive and get the patient to the hospital. Because of these actions, a life was saved today.

You can help, too! If you see an adult collapse:
1. Call 9-1-1.
2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of "Stayin' Alive."

It is never easy to lose one of our own. In times like these, the strength of the fire service brotherhood and the support of our community help carry us forward. Over the past week, we have been truly humbled by the outpouring of support shown to our department.

During our annual Family Night this past weekend, we had the honor of presenting Captain Suess’ family with a commemorative helmet and shield. We were honored to surround the helmet with thank you cards created by students from Hamel Elementary, offering messages of gratitude.

This tribute served as a lasting way to honor Justin’s service, dedication, and the many contributions he made to our department and the community he proudly served.

We extend a sincere thank you to Hamel Elementary School, Taylor's Tins, Mac's Fire & Safety, Inc, and our neighboring departments for going above and beyond to support our department during this difficult time.

Friends, as we anticipate a winter weather event, please be prepared to be home for extended times this weekend, potentially into Monday. Remember, safe and home is much better than traveling into the unknown and risking yourselves and others.

With the snow and wind, comes snow drifts. Please be sure to check the gas exhausts on your home. Make sure they are clear of snow drifts.

Any blockage can cause CO to back up into hour home and become a dangerous situation.

This morning we had a call where this occurred. The family's CO detectors were working properly and alerted the family to call for help. After finding that their gas exhausts had become blocked by a snowdrift, they cleared the drifts and now this family is safe and sound on this cold snowy day.

Please be sure to check your gas exhausts outside and check your CO detectors to be sure they are in working order.

Stay warm and safe on this cold snowy day! Enjoy the extra time with your loved ones.
