Happy Labor Day from TTASC!

Today we recognize the hard work and dedication of workers across Connecticut, including the prevention professionals, counselors, coalition members, and advocates who show up for their communities every day.

As we rest and recharge this Labor Day, it's also a good reminder that mental health matters at work, too. Take care of yourself and check in on your colleagues.

: September is also National Recovery Month!

Recovery Month celebrates the millions of people in recovery and reminds us that there are many pathways to healing and no one has to walk them alone.

Whether from mental health challenges, substance use, or both, recovery is possible. What works for one person may look different for another, and every step forward is worth celebrating.

In Connecticut, LiveLOUD offers support and resources for people and families navigating recovery from opioid use.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.

August 31 is a global day to remember those we've lost, acknowledge the grief of families and communities, and take action to end overdose. This year marks 25 years of IOAD โ€” "25 Years On. Still Needed."

Every life lost to overdose is one too many. We honor their memory by spreading awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting access to life-saving resources like naloxone, treatment, and harm reduction.

How you can take action today:
๐Ÿ”น Wear purple in remembrance
๐Ÿ”น Attend a local vigil (ctclearinghouse.org/ioad)
๐Ÿ”น Carry naloxone & learn the signs
๐Ÿ”น Share resources & reduce stigma
๐Ÿ”น Check in on someone you love

To everyone who has lost someone, and everyone in recovery โ€” we see you, and we stand with you.

: As Overdose Awareness Week arrives, many in our communities are carrying grief for loved ones lost, and for the weight of this ongoing crisis.

Grief is not a sign of weakness. It's love with nowhere to go. And caring for yourself through it is essential.

Gentle reminders for hard days:
โœ”๏ธ There's no ""right"" timeline for grief
โœ”๏ธ Reach out. You don't have to carry it alone
โœ”๏ธ Take breaks from heavy news and social media
โœ”๏ธ Honor your loved one in ways that feel meaningful
โœ”๏ธ Seek professional support when you need it

To everyone grieving this week: you are seen, and you are not alone.

August 21 is National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day.

Established in 2022, this day honors the lives lost to overdoses involving illegally made fentanyl, remembering that behind every statistic is a person: someone's child, sibling, parent, or friend. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ

Here's what everyone should know:
๐Ÿ”น Fentanyl is the leading cause of overdose deaths in the U.S. and even a tiny amount can be fatal
๐Ÿ”น Counterfeit pills often contain illegally made fentanyl, and you can't tell just by looking
๐Ÿ”น Fentanyl is frequently mixed into other drugs like co***ne, m**h, and xylazine, often without the person's knowledge

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ How you can take action and save lives:
โœ… Carry naloxone (Narcanยฎ) and keep it at home
โœ… Use fentanyl test strips (remember, no test is 100% accurate)
โœ… Never take pills that weren't prescribed to you by a pharmacy
โœ… Avoid mixing substances, and never use alone
โœ… Know the signs of an overdose and how to respond

This year's theme centers on hope and mental health, a reminder that recovery is possible, treatment works, and no one has to face substance use alone.

: Knowledge is one of the most powerful prevention tools we have.

Opioids including both prescription pain medications and synthetic drugs are highly addictive and remain a leading driver of overdose deaths in Connecticut and across the country. Understanding how they work, the warning signs of misuse, and how to respond in an emergency can save a life.

๐Ÿ“Œ A few key things to know:
๐Ÿ”น Opioids can be prescribed for pain, but even short-term use carries risk
๐Ÿ”น Mixing opioids with other substances, or using alone, increases the danger of overdose
๐Ÿ”น If an overdose is suspected, naloxone (Narcanยฎ) can reverse it. Call 911 right away
๐Ÿ”น Treatment works: medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and therapy support recovery

Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or community member, being informed is the first step toward prevention. ๐Ÿ’ฌ
