Yesterday, we had the pleasure of participating in Career Day at Townsend Elementary School!
Ashley Silano-Moore and Lila Shafer spoke with students about the many career opportunities in agriculture available through Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County, including roles such as 4-H Animal Science Educator and Horticulture Educator. Students also received pumpkin, cucumber, and zinnia seeds to take home and start growing themselves.
Thank you to Townsend Elementary School for inviting us to be part of this wonderful event!

We would like to congratulate our first 2026 4-H Salute to Excellence winner, Lindy Taggart, from *official* Friends of Delaware County 4-H! 🄳

Lindy is being recognized as a Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer (10 or more years of service to 4-H).

She has devoted more than sixty years to 4-H and serving her community. As a youth member of the Walton Workers and later the Nifty Nine 4-H Clubs, she built a
foundation of leadership and service that would shape the rest of her life. Lindy showed
sheep and held multiple club offices, including president. She represented the county at the 1966 New York State Horticultural Show and participated in a 1967 soil conservation initiative planting 1,000 trees; early evidence of her commitment to stewardship.

As an adult, Lindy raised her own children in 4-H and served as a club leader for the Jolly Barnyard Gang and Super Clover Clubs. In 1985, she founded the 4-H Animal Dress Up Contest at the Delaware County Fair—an activity that remains a beloved tradition today. Since 1999, Lindy has served on the 4-H Camp Committee, prioritizing youth safety, program quality, and long-term sustainability. Her leadership was especially critical in 2003 when a devastating windstorm felled hundreds of trees and destroyed camp structures mid-season. Lindy worked tirelessly alongside other volunteers to clean up debris, rebuild cabins, and construct safety fencing—encouraging everyone to persevere until the work was complete. Because of those efforts, camp reopened the following week. Lindy continues to volunteer year-round—assisting with fair set-up, serving as a county and district Public Presentations evaluator, and supporting her grandchildren as active 4-H members.

Thank you for your dedication to 4-H, Lindy! šŸ€
