The Hamden Fire Department were dispatched to a fire on Winnett Street last night at 9:32 PM. Crews arrived at 9:35 PM. Upon arrival they encountered heavy fire and smoke on the first and second floors. An aggressive fire attack was able to quickly extinguish the fire on the first floor. The older style house had balloon frame construction. Before HFD's arrival the fire had followed a chase in the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor and attic via the chase that lacked fire stops.

An occupant was alerted to the fire by an activated smoke detector. He was able to alert two other family members and safely evacuate the building. Two occupants were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and observation. They are expected to make a full recovery. No firefighters were injured at the fire. Cheshire, New Haven, and North Haven Fire Departments offered mutual aid at the fire as well as station coverage.

The Fire Marshal Office has determined that the fire started in a den on the first floor. The investigation to the exact cause is ongoing.

We’re proud to share the latest from our ongoing training sessions designed to keep our firefighters at the top of their game.

Why Live Fire Training?
Under NFPA 1403 guidelines, live fire training is essential for preparing our team to handle the intense and unpredictable nature of real-life emergencies. This vital training ensures that every firefighter is equipped with the skills and confidence needed to respond effectively when every second counts.

Back to Basics: Our recent training focused on fundamental evolutions, sharpening our skills in:

Vertical Ventilation: Mastering the techniques to safely ventilate structures.
Search and Rescue: Practicing efficient methods to locate and assist those in need.
Advancing Hose Lines: Ensuring effective water application in high-pressure situations.
Protecting Ladder Raises: Learning safe and strategic ladder operations.

Rehab and Repeat: Our firefighters engage in rigorous rehab practices to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared to tackle the next challenge.

This training is not just about drills; it’s about building a resilient team that stands ready for every call, ensuring the safety of Hamden. Together, we are dedicated to Execute with Excellence!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the New Haven Fire Department as they mourn the passing of one of their own. Our condolescences to the family of Thomas Kelly.

From Chief of Department Daniel Coughlin - The Department regrets to announce the passing of Firefighter Thomas Kelly Truck 4 Tillerman. Appointed to the department October 10, 1979 and assigned to Truck 4 Division 3.
Firefighter Kelly was conducting roof operations at a fire 1142 Chapel street when he fell 30 feet through a covered shaft. He sustained catastrophic injuries and yesterday, after 34 years of strength and resilience, he succumbed to those injuries. Firefighter Kelly is a prime example of the strength and commitment that all who have worn our badge possess. We ask you to pray for his family and this great Department ☘️
