Pastures and hayfields provide essential forage for livestock; however, certain plants may pose toxicity risks. Proper identification and timely precautions are key to reducing these hazards. This program, themed “Hidden Hazards in Hayfields and Pastures” will focus on practical strategies to reduce these threats.

Presentations will cover nitrate poisoning, prussic acid, and other forage-related toxicities, with state and national experts offering strategies to mitigate the risk of toxic plants. Featured speakers include Dr. Mary Drewnowski (University of Nebraska—Lincoln) and Dr. Shelby Gruss (Iowa State University), national experts in nitrate and prussic acid poisoning, respectively.

Registration opens at 8 am, with the program starting at 8:30 am. The registration fee is $40 per person, payable by cash, card, or check. Early registration is encouraged for planning purposes. The conference is recommended for forage and livestock producers seeking to reduce poisoning risk in cattle, equine, and small ruminants.

To pre-register, scan the QR code or contact Harley Warren: 870-917-8580 or [email protected]. The conference will be held at the UAM Agriculture Building,1408 Scogin Dr, Monticello, AR 71655.

❤️ Seeing Red for a Healthy Heart! ❤️

The Extension Get Fit class showed up in RED today to celebrate National Heart Month! We had fun, got moving, and reminded ourselves that our hearts work hard for us every single day — so it’s important we take care of them. 💪💗

Here are some simple, heart-happy tips you can start today:

💗 Move more.
Aim for at least 30 minutes most days. Walking, dancing, stretching, or even chair exercises all count!

💗 Eat smart.
Fill your plate with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein. Cut back on salt, sugar, and saturated fat. Even small changes can make a BIG difference.

💗 Know your numbers.
Keep track of your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Regular checkups matter!

💗 Manage stress.
Try deep breathing, prayer, mindfulness, or hobbies that bring you joy.

💗 Quit smoking & avoid secondhand smoke.
Smoking damages blood vessels and raises your risk for heart disease and stroke.

💗 Make sleep a priority.
Aim for 7–9 hours each night to help regulate blood pressure and heart function.

💗 Schedule regular checkups.
Routine visits help catch risk factors early and keep your heart on track.

Let’s keep loving our hearts — this month and every month! ❤️

Relief efforts are underway to assist livestock producers affected by the wildfires in Oklahoma. Oklahoma Cooperative Extension has a help hotline (405-780-4568 or [email protected]). If you have producers reach out to you about hay donations, please be mindful that if you are in a fire ant quarantine zone certain hay storage method will be required. The Arkansas Department of Agriculture has a resource available for hay movement - https://agriculture.arkansas.gov/crops-industry/regulatory-services/imported-fire-ant-program/. There may also be limitations to movement due to pesticide application restrictions. Producers should discuss both of these with the provided contact support hotlines when considering hay donations.
