In the late 1930s, more than 150,000 volunteers with a love for aviation argued for an organization to put their planes and flying sk

ills to use in defense of their country. As a result, the Civil Air Patrol was born one week prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Thousands of volunteer members answered America's call to national service and sacrifice by accepting and performing critical wartime missions. Assigned to the War Department under the jurisdiction of the Army Air Corps, the contributions of Civil Air Patrol, including logging more than 500,000 flying hours, sinking two enemy submarines, and saving hundreds of crash victims during World War II, are well documented. After the war, a thankful nation understood that Civil Air Patrol could continue providing valuable services to both local and national agencies. On July 1, 1946, President Harry Truman signed Public Law 476 incorporating Civil Air Patrol as a benevolent, nonprofit organization. On May 26, 1948, Congress passed Public Law 557 permanently establishing Civil Air Patrol as the auxiliary of the new U.S. Three primary mission areas were set forth at that time: aerospace education, cadet programs, and emergency services. THE CORPORATION
• Is classified as a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) corporation.
• Operates as the all-volunteer civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force when performing services for the federal government.
• Includes eight geographic regions consisting of 52 wings (the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia).
• Has nearly 1,500 squadrons, and more than 60,000 volunteer cadet and adult members nationwide.
• Provides opportunities for members to serve the community, participate in resident and/or distance learning leadership development training and acquire new skills to benefit personal and professional growth.
• Operates one of the largest fleets of single-engine piston aircraft in the world, with 550 currently in the fleet.
• Flies approximately 112,000 hours annually.
• Maintains a fleet of more than 900 emergency service vehicles for training and mission support.
• Provides support to cadets and adult members through more than 550 chaplains.
• Supports members with about 100 corporate staff at CAP National Headquarters at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

Every year, our squadron nominates a cadet for the Air Force Association Award. For the year of 2024, the AFA Award was presented to C/SMSgt Monkelbaan. Col. Pecorora, USAF Retired, took time out of his day to present the award. Cadet Monkelbaan displays outstanding dedication, leadership and commitment to the squadron and the community. He participates in squadron, group and wing events. Whether it’s assisting the new cadets or leading training sessions, he has exemplified the essence of what it means to be a CAP cadet.

Congratulations C/SMSgt Monkelbaan!

Yesterday at our weekly meeting, cadets learned basics of shelter building only using resources available to them. They learned what an ideal shelter needs and had time to practice building them.

We also had our monthly saftey briefing where Lt Col Terhaar spoke about being safe around moving aircraft.

Southtowns Squadron is excited to take part in a research project. We are one of two squadrons in WNYG and one of about 400 hundred teams throughout the nation to take part in a project that NASA has created. Civil Air Patrol has been tasked by NASA to take pictures of contrails created by aircraft for their research. For more information about this task click the link below:

As part of Civil Air Patrol's Aerospace mission, AEOs from WNY and FLG came together to support a STEAM Night at Cuba-Rushford central Schools. A hands-on lesson showcasing the various applications of parachutes in military, safety, and recreational settings, created by cadets from WNYG CAC was provided. Students had the opportunity to explore a sport parachute up close before designing and testing their own parachutes.

A big thank you to Cuba-Rushford Central School for the invitation and for allowing us to share our knowledge and passion with your students.

Last night was Western New York Group’s annual Military Ball. Each year we celebrate the accomplishments of all the squadrons, as well as recognizing cadet and senior member milestones.

Southtowns took home two special awards. Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Samuel Smith received Cadet NCO of the Year. Our squadron was awarded with Squadron of the Year.

Thanks to the efforts of our cadets, senior members, and support of our families. We had a great year and are excited for the successes ahead. We would also like to recognize the valuable practices shared with us, by other units, which are helping us grow into a stronger, more united team throughout the entire group.

Yesterday Southtowns Squadron hosted the WNY Group Color Guard training day.

The goal of the training day was to instruct some cadets the basics of Color Guard while others were selected to present the colors at the Group Military Ball that will happen in February.

We appreciate the cadets that took time out of their long weekend to attend.
