In Minnesota, the 2026 statewide tornado drills are scheduled for Thursday, April 16 at 1:45 p.m. and 645 p.m. CDT. This obviously will include Kittson County.

If you hear sirens going off during these times you will now know that they are for, please pass on to others.

*** FREEZING DRIZZLE/RAIN CREATING SLIPPERY ROADS ***

MOST OF KITTSON COUNTY IS EXPERIENCING FREEZING DRIZZLE/RAIN TO ADD TO THE BLOWING SNOW THAT WE RECEIVED EARLIER TODAY. THE ENTIRE COMBINATION HAS MADE SEVERAL BLACK-TOP ROADWAYS SLIPPERY WITH SNOW COVER AND DRIFTING IN MANY AREAS.

STATE AND COUNTY HIGHWAY WORKERS WILL BE OUT EARLY IN THE MORNING TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REMOVAL BUT YOU MAY WANT TO ALLOW EXTRA TIME FOR YOURSELF IF YOU NEED TO TRAVEL FROM TONIGHT (TUESDAY 3/17/26) INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING!

County road #1 north of Hallock is closed due to a big drift and 2 vehicles are stuck on the road. One in each lane. County plows are not coming out till 5 am tomorrow morning. Be safe and stay home tonight. Blizzard warning now in effect till midnight is the latest update on the weather.

From the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, ND:

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM CST WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy snow and areas of blowing snow. Total snow
accumulations between 4 and 7 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35
mph.

* WHERE...Portions of northwest Minnesota and northeast and
southeast North Dakota.

* WHEN...Until 6 AM CST Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Falling and blowing
snow will lead to areas of quick and sudden reductions to
visibility, making travel difficult, especially in rural areas
that are prone to blowing snow. The hazardous conditions will
impact the Tuesday evening commute.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use
extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.

**** FULL TIME DISPATCHER/JAILER ****

The Kittson County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for Full-Time Dispatcher/Jailer Position. Applicants must have high school diploma or GED, minimum of 18 years of age, basic knowledge of telephone equipment, radio/computer equipment operation, have the ability to perform effective and timely multi-task emergency dispatch functions in stressful situations and be able to deal with the public in a professional manner. Position requires working rotating shifts which includes some nights, weekends and holidays. Applicants must be able to pass a thorough background investigation.
Pay will be based on experience with a Top Pay of $34.60/hr for contract year 2026. Previous employment with Public Safety Dispatching will strongly affect applicant’s opportunity to start higher on the pay scale.
Kittson County offers a $4.00/hr shift differential pay for hours worked between 4:00pm – 8:00am.
Paid Vacation/Sick time and Longevity Pay are also included in our full-time employment package with the following increases at corresponding years of service:
10 years of service – 4%
15 years of service – 6%
20 years of service – 8%
We have 12 paid Holidays for employees and a paid single plan health insurance package that is supplemented with an HSA Account currently at $358.33/month. (Family health insurance plans available at a higher premium)
The current schedule for dispatchers are 12-hour shifts resulting in 4 hours of compensated time per pay period.
