SEVERE WEATHER THREAT - MONDAY, MARCH 16, 2026🚨
The NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a level 4/5 risk level for strong, severe thunderstorms on Monday, March 16th, 2026.
We wanted to give everyone a run down on what to expect on Monday.
Impacts:
● Severe, long lived thunderstorms β›ˆοΈ
● Tornados (EF2+) πŸŒͺ
● Strong wind (50-70+ MPH gusts) πŸ’¨
● Large hail 🧊
Time:
● Late Monday morning into Monday afternoon
● Timing is subject to change and exact times are not confident at this time
⚠️This 4/5 risk level is extremely rare, especially for this area, and is only issued in this area once every few years. Begin preparations now to handle severe weather and be prepared for when watches and warnings are issued, including tornado warnings. Anything can happen.⚠️

If you live in the town of South Boston or Halifax or near the following fire departments of Scottsburg, Clover, Triangle, Liberty, North Halifax, and Oak Level you will probably hear the sirens being tested on March 10, 2026 as Halifax County participates in the State Wide Tornado Drill

PUBLIC NOTICE
Halifax County has opened a warming and device‑charging center today to support residents affected by the power outage in the northern end of the county. The center will remain open until 6:00 PM this evening
Location: North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department.
Please note:

This is not an overnight shelter.
Bring your own food and drinks, as these will not be provided.
The center will close if power comes back on before 6:00 PM

🧊 Snow and ice will impact Halifax County beginning tomorrow. Extremely cold temperatures will follow and last into February causing the event to last many days
πŸ›‘ Downed trees, power lines and treacherous road conditions will make driving extremely dangerous and impossible in some areas
πŸ†˜ Power outages are likely and will span several days
βœ… Plan for extended power outages by having a backup source of heat and keep cell phones and battery backup chargers charged
βœ… Have perishable food and a handheld can opener available
βœ… Fill propane tanks for cooking outside or buy charcoal for your grill
βœ… Fill your car with gas
βœ… Refill all prescriptions
βœ… If oxygen dependent, make sure you have a backup power source and extra tanks
βœ… Have extra batteries on hand for flashlights and lanterns
βœ… Have enough supplies In your house to care for you, your family and your pets for 72 or more hours

Everyone Roads are mostly wet from Halifax South there are a few slick spots but roads are in good shape overall. Northern end of the County got the most and there are some roads up there that are covered in snow but overall are passable. Stay home if you can.
