Are you at least 65-years-old? Permanently disabled? A totally disabled U.S. veteran or their surviving spouse? If so, you may qualify for North Carolina property tax relief. Please read the rest of this post for more information.
Halifax County residents who own and occupy their home as the primary residence on January 1, 2026 may qualify if all criteria established by the State of North Carolina is met. Exclusion categories include the following:
- Seniors aged 65 or older
- Individuals who are under 65-years-old but are permanently and totally disabled
- 100% disabled U.S. veterans or their surviving spouses who have not remarried
For those property owners who are seniors 65 or older OR are under 65 and are totally/permanently disabled, the program excludes the greater of $25,000 or 50% of the assessed value of the permanent residence and 1 acre of land. For 2026, the income of the ENTIRE household (not just the applicant) cannot exceed $38,800. Proof of income is REQUIRED as part of the application process.
For those property owners who are 100% disabled veterans or the surviving spouse who has not remarried, the program excludes up to $45,000 of the assessed value of the residence and 1 acre of land. Income information is not required but a disabled veteran's certification from the Halifax County Veteran's Service Office is REQUIRED.
Completed applications including the required proof of income and/or certifications must be returned to the Halifax County Tax Assessor's Office BEFORE June 1 to be considered timely. Links are below.
