The Hahira Fire Department (HFD) has recently been awarded an EMS Agency License from the Georgia Department of Public Health, Office of EMS and Trauma, recognizing the department as a Licensed Medical First Responder Agency. The designation reinforces HFD's role in delivering timely, effective medical response and enhances its ability to work alongside SGMC Health EMS to improve patient outcomes.
Earning the Medical First Responder (MFR) agency license reflects HFD’s commitment to an integrated emergency response system. Fire personnel responding to calls are trained and licensed to deliver medical care using approved protocols under the guidance of a medical director. This coordination ensures that trained fire personnel can initiate medical treatment sooner, helping bridge the gap until transport arrives and continuing care through to the emergency department.
In addition, HFD's focus on ongoing training, and education has strengthened its ability to respond to a wide range of medical emergencies, including trauma-related incidents. Regular training opportunities, supported through its partnership with SGMC Health EMS, have provided personnel with expanded knowledge and hands-on experience, further elevating the quality of care delivered in the field.
Overall, obtaining this license marks an important step forward for HFD, reinforcing its commitment to professional service and improved patient outcomes for the community it serves

During their regular meeting on May 26, 2026, the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners lifted the countywide burn restrictions that were previously implemented due to dry conditions and elevated wildfire risk. Following recent rainfall and improved conditions, officials determined it was safe to lift the restrictions based on guidance from the Georgia Forestry Commission and Lowndes County Fire Rescue. The burn restrictions will be lifted beginning June 1.

Residents are reminded that all outdoor burning must comply with the Lowndes County Burn Ordinance. The ordinance allows outdoor burning activities in the unincorporated areas of Lowndes County on the first and third Saturdays of each month. With the burn restrictions lifted, the first allowable day for outdoor burning will be Saturday, June 6. While the residential burning of hand-piled vegetation in unincorporated Lowndes County does not require a permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission, agricultural, commercial, acreage, and land-clearing burns may require a permit and must continue to follow all Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) guidelines.

Property owners should always monitor weather and wind conditions, keep burns attended at all times, and take the necessary precautions to help prevent wildfires. For additional information regarding outdoor burning regulations, please contact Lowndes County Fire Rescue at 229-671-2730

Even though the Georgia Forestry Commission has lifted the burn ban for our area, Lowndes County’s local burn restrictions remain in place due to ongoing exceptional drought conditions. While the recent rain has helped, it has not been enough to significantly improve conditions across the county.

Forestry permits and agricultural burns are not impacted by the local restrictions. At this time, open burning of yard debris, including leaves, limbs, grass, and other vegetative matter, remains temporarily restricted until drought conditions improve.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping keep our community safe.
