The Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office annual “Shop with the Sheriff” program is quickly approaching. Each year, this special program provides Christmas presents to children in Westmoreland County and helps make the holiday season a little brighter for local families.

To assist with funding this important program, Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office personnel will have the opportunity to participate in our “No Shave Until March 1st” Campaign. From September 1, 2026, through March 1, 2027, personnel who make a donation to participate will be permitted to grow facial hair in accordance with established guidelines.

When you notice some of our personnel looking a little different over the next several months, don’t be alarmed. It is all being done for an extremely worthy cause: helping provide Christmas gifts to children in our community.

If any individuals or businesses would like to donate to our “Shop with the Sheriff” program or have questions about the program, please contact 1st Sergeant Antwan Smith at [email protected] or (804) 493-0106 ext. 2202. If you are making a donation by check, please make the check payable to the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office and designate “Shop with the Sheriff” in the memo section.

As many of you know, I’m old school. I like to send letters to the editor. Please see my latest letter to the editor of the Westmoreland News:

Dear Editor,

By the time you read this, the joint meeting between the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors and School Board will be over.

The School Board raised concerns about local match funding, but during the meeting, Chairman Trivett and I raised serious questions about spending at the Westmoreland County Public Schools Central Office. It is also important to remember that the County provides additional funding for school facilities through our Capital Improvement Plan.

As discussed publicly, the incoming superintendent received a payment of more than $200k, in addition to a new vehicle and a salary now exceeding $200k annually. The School Board defended the payment as part of the contract negotiation process.

Chairman Trivett and I also questioned the removal of the two year cap on leave payouts for retiring 12 month employees and an approximately $80k payment to the outgoing superintendent upon retirement. The size and timing of these payments, along with the change in leave policy, raise legitimate questions that taxpayers deserve to have answered.

I am a classroom teacher too. I understand what teachers face, and I believe our teachers and students should come first when dollars are tight.

I want a good working relationship with our School Board. But when members take disputes to social media and publicly criticize the Board of Supervisors, it creates unnecessary conflict when we should be working together.

I encourage citizens to watch the meeting and draw their own conclusions. Taxpayers deserve transparency and accountability.

Once upon a time, this was a beautiful property overlooking Nomini Creek. Unfortunately, throughout the years, it has fallen into serious disrepair and is ultimately collapsing into the creek.

Over the past 2½ years that I’ve served on the Board of Supervisors, I’ve made addressing blight throughout our district a priority. Neglected properties like this affect our communities, our waterways, surrounding property values, and the overall appearance of Westmoreland County.

The sale of the McGuire’s Wharf property will require that it be cleaned up, providing an opportunity to address a problem that has existed for far too long.

I know there is still plenty of work ahead, but I’m proud of the progress we’re making and will continue pushing to clean up blight and improve our communities throughout the district.

At last week’s meeting, Westmoreland Board of Supervisors authorized County Administrator Donna Cogswell to advertise a public hearing to sell the property of 385 McGuire’s Wharf by auction, sealed bid, or through a realtor.

We had a great Town Hall this evening with many community members discussing our new Parks and Recreation program.

As County Administration continues establishing the processes and procedures needed to build the program, after-school activities are one of our top priorities. We’ll have more information to share about these programs soon.

Thank you to everyone who came out, shared ideas, and joined the conversation. I look forward to continuing this positive momentum as we build a Parks and Recreation program our entire community can be proud of.

At last week’s Westmoreland Board of Supervisors meeting, the County got an introduction to its new director of Parks & Rec, Rebecca Panis.
