UPDATE ON THE STATUS OF MOBILE CRISIS SERVICES IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

HAGERSTOWN, MD September 26, 2025

The Washington County Mental Health Authority is pleased to announce that we will be contracting with Potomac Community Services to provide mental health Mobile Crisis Response and Stabilization Services in Washington County with a target start date of October 20, 2025.

In June, Sheppard Pratt announced their intent to discontinue their contract for Mobile Crisis Services in Washington County. In response to this announcement, the Washington County Mental Health Authority released a request for proposals to seek a qualified provider to assume this service.

A review committee of community stakeholders considered Potomac Community Services to be the organization best positioned to take on Mobile Crisis Response and Stabilization Services in Washington County. Their proposal was supported by key stakeholders which included Meritus Medical Center, Washington County Sheriff's Office, Hagerstown Police Department, and Washington County Public Schools. For more than 25 years, PCS has provided case management services in Washington County. Over the years, they increased their community impact by expanding beyond Targeted Case Management Services for Adults and Mental Health Care Coordination Services for youth and families. Today, PCS serves Washington County along with Carroll and Frederick counties to provide service and oversight to more than a dozen other programs that are either grant or contract funded.

Calls will be answered by Sheppard Pratt until 4pm Friday, October 3rd. After a brief period in which the service operations transfer between providers, the Potomac Community Services Mobile Response Team is targeted to be available beginning at 8am Monday, October 20th.

The number to contact the Mobile Response Team will remain 240-625-2246.

Help is always available 24/7 by calling or texting 988, or in the event of an emergency, 911.

As March unfolds, basketball "madness" is in full swing! With this excitement comes a growing focus on sports betting, as more states discuss and pass legislation around it. The American Gambling Association (AGA) estimates that over 50 million Americans will bet more than $10 billion combined on March Madness, with an increasing share being placed through legal U.S. online sportsbooks and casinos.

In light of this, March also marks Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM), a nationwide grassroots campaign sponsored by the National Council on Problem Gambling. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the risks associated with gambling, educate healthcare professionals, and encourage open conversations about the signs of problem gambling. The goal is to inform individuals about the resources available, both nationally and here in Maryland, to support help, hope, and recovery for those affected by gambling.

As part of the "Have the Conversation" initiative, Washington County PROSC is excited to host Carin Miller, CPRS, RPS, a Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist and Registered Peer Supervisor at the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling (the Center). The Center is a program of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is funded by the Maryland Department of Health’s Behavioral Health Administration. Carin serves the Western Maryland region and brings extensive knowledge on responsible gambling.

To further this conversation, Washington County PROSC and Washington Goes Purple will host a live presentation on the Washington Goes Purple and Washington County BHS page featuring Carin Miller. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 25, at 11 AM. We encourage you to join us and share this valuable resource with your networks.
