EXTREME WEATHER POTENTIAL ALERT

The National Weather Service issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for our area forecasting severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and tornadoes likely this afternoon and evening. There is the potential for significant damage from wind gusts of 70 to 80 mph as well as an isolated stronger tornado. These threats are highest for areas along and east of Interstate 81.

This event has the potential to create widespread outages of long duration. Citizens should be prepared, especially if power is relied on for medical equipment.

HLD is monitoring and preparing accordingly. Outage restoration follows the industry standard of 911 emergencies & critical infrastructure first, followed by large area restorations, then individual services.

Customers should report all downed wires, cables, and facilities to the HLD along with any power outages by calling 301-790-2600 and providing their name, address, and phone number with any detailed information. HLD staff will categorize, plan, and execute restoration activities based on this information until all customers are restored.

REMEMBER: Treat all downed utility facilities as extremely dangerous. Stay away and stay alive!

The HLD and contracted crews continue to cut and remove trees from our facilities and rebuild our infrastructure. Immediately following the severe weather event, the HLD experienced over 13,000 outages to its 18,500 customers. Priorities for restoration were critical infrastructures such as water and wastewater treatment facilities as well as communications and safety elements. Large blocks of outages were then focused upon while scouts surveyed damage and tree crews began the large task of removals so the HLD and contract crews could access damaged facilities. Within 24 hours, thousands of customers were restored, and we continue working around the clock to complete restoration which is proving to be extremely difficult and lengthy. There are/were multiple broken poles, thousands of feet of wire, and multiple transformers destroyed. Due to this, we must adjust our estimated time of restoration to the majority of customers to Tuesday 4/22 at 11:59pm. There may be isolated pockets of outages remaining after that time due to continued rebuilding of infrastructure or customer related repairs. Report outages by calling 301-790-2600. We appreciate all the kind words and encouragement from the community as we are here to work for you.
