Bergen County Veterans Services

The Division of Veteran Services provides support to all resident veterans and their dependents.

Summary of Services
The Division of Veterans Services was established in 1977 to provide resident veterans and their dependents with information and assistance in obtaining earned entitlements from federal, state, and local governments, as well as any that are available from the private sector. Through a quarterly newsletter and direct client contact, the division provides Bergen’s veterans organ

izations and their auxiliaries and individual residents with up-to-date benefit information. Daily activities include:
•Directing requests for VA compensation
•Supply information on pensions, home loans
•Information on burial and Memorial benefits
•Education and Training programs availability
•Lost military separation papers
•Forms for military medals and records

Goals
•Advising veterans of their rights and the benefits available to them through various programs now in existence
•Guiding veterans through the proper channels to obtain benefits
•Supplying and assisting with the completion of the forms to obtain various benefits
•Advising and assisting veterans’ widows and children in obtaining benefits available to them
•Maintaining a list of available employment opportunities
•Making referrals to other agencies whenever necessary
•Calling on industry and organizations which may be able to offer employment to veterans

The County of Bergen will be hosting two events in honor and remembrance of 25 years since the attacks on September 11.

A special Memorial Vigil will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 6:30 PM, at the Amphitheater at Overpeck County Park, featuring the New Jersey Wind Symphony.

The County will also host its Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 3:30 PM, at the 9/11 Memorial Monument in Overpeck County Park (Henry Hoebel Area, Fort Lee Rd, Leonia).

Please join us in community as we remember the lasting impact of September 11.

Proud to recognize our August Veteran of the Month, James Zaconie, at yesterday's Commissioner Public Meeting.

Following his graduation from Westwood High School in 1966, James enlisted in the United States Navy. After his military service, he went on to dedicate decades to local fire service, including with Garfield Fire Company No. 4, Mahwah Fire Company No. 2, and as Fire Chief in Washington Township.

We are grateful to Mr. Zaconie for his service to our nation and our communities. Congratulations, and welcome home!

The Purple Heart, one of our nation’s oldest military honors, is awarded to U.S. service members wounded or killed in combat. This Purple Heart Day, the County of Bergen honors the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country.

☀️🌡️ Bergen County has opened emergency Cooling Centers to help residents stay safe during this week’s heat wave. Centers will operate Tuesday, July 14, through Thursday, July 16, from 9 AM to 6 PM.

Those in need of transportation to a County cooling center may call the Division of Community Transportation at 201‑394‑2882.

🐈️ 🐩 The cooling center at One Bergen County Plaza is pet‑friendly (all pets must be crated or leashed).

With temperatures expected to rise above 90 degrees, please stay hydrated, limit time in the sun, and check in on elderly neighbors and young children. Never leave a child or pet in a vehicle — even for a moment. Residents are encouraged to check their local municipal cooling centers before traveling to a County facility.

As the heat wave continues, our Bergen County emergency cooling centers remain open through 6PM today. ☀️🌡️

Please note that the Northwest Senior Activity Center in Midland Park is CLOSED due to a power outage. Those in the area are encouraged to instead visit local municipal centers, their nearest County cooling center, or the County Administration building in Hackensack.

🐕️🐈️ Pets are welcome at the County Administration Building cooling center as long as they are crated or leashed. 🚗 Those in need of transportation to a County cooling center can contact our Division of Community Transportation at 201-394-2882.

Stay hydrated and out of the sun during this time. Check in on elderly neighbors and young children, and never leave a child or pet in a vehicle — even for a moment.

The County has opened emergency cooling centers to help keep residents safe during this heat wave. Centers are open 9am - 6pm until Sunday, July 5.

At yesterday's Commissioner Public Meeting, we were proud to welcome and recognize Jake Prusha as Bergen County’s Veteran of the Month!

A lifelong Hillsdale resident, Jake was inspired by the service of his great-uncle, who was a Chief Medical Aid in the U.S. Army. Jake began his public service career as a 9-1-1 dispatcher, volunteer firefighter, and volunteer EMT before joining the U.S. Coast Guard. As a Health Service Technician stationed in Boston, he served aboard a mobile medical unit delivering essential care to remote installations and disaster zones. He was honorably discharged in August 2025.

Jake has continued to serve his community and fellow veterans, emerging as a passionate advocate for mental health after witnessing and experiencing its impact on service members. In 2025 he completed 100 consecutive days of the Murph workout, raising $20,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project. This year he ran 10 miles a day for 50 days, sharing mental health stories from every state and raising more than $26,000 to support mental health programs for military members and veterans.

We're honored to recognize Jake for his dedication and service, and thank him for his commitment to uplifting his fellow servicemembers. Thank you as well to County Commissioner Steve Tanelli for highlighting our Bergen County veterans through this important initiative.
