At approximately 1300 hours on Sunday, June 7th, the Hackensack Fire Department was notified of a 911 call received by Bergen County Communications indicating that a female party had entered the 14th floor trash chute of 150 Main Street and had fallen to an unknown location inside the chute. HFD’s Second Platoon under the command of Deputy Chief J. Derevyanik responded and the all hands working assignment was transmitted for a technical rescue, bringing in additional resources to the scene and to the City. Additional assistance was received from the Hackensack Police Department and EMS crews from HUMC.
Initially unable to be located, investigation revealed the party had fallen to the area of the 3rd or 4th floor and was stuck in the chute with backed up trash. Efforts began to extricate the party by utilizing saws to remove panels from the trash chute discharge, while other crews prepared for a possible rope operation or wall breach.
HFD crews were able to continue removing the trash from the chute until the female party was able to be removed feet first, approximately 28 minutes after dispatch. She was placed in the care of EMS. One HFD member was transported to HUMC for an arm injury. Decon was required for all members and equipment involved. Mutual aid companies covered the City while crews operated.
