The City of Guy Police Department, Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office, and Conway Police Department joined together today for the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Arkansas as the Flame of Hope made its way through Conway.

Each year in May, law enforcement officers from across the state come together for the largest Torch Run in Arkansas. The 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Arkansas officially began this week as officers and athletes carried the “Flame of Hope” through communities across Arkansas. The torches will ultimately converge tomorrow at the Arkansas State Capitol for the ceremonial Final Leg Torch Run.

We are honored to join agencies from across the state each year to help carry the torch through Conway in support of an incredible mission. Through programming in sports, health, education, and community building, Special Olympics Arkansas continues changing the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities across our state. Special Olympics Arkansas provides opportunities for more than 19,000 athletes and 16,000 volunteers in all 75 Arkansas counties.

The mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run is to raise awareness and support for these athletes and the programs that empower them every day. Nearly 100 agencies and approximately 1,500 officers across Arkansas work year-round to support this cause, and we are proud to stand beside them in support of these amazing athletes.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. At the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., there is a quote engraved on the wall that reads, "It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived." On Peace Officers Memorial Day and during National Police Week, we honor the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their communities, and we celebrate the courage of these heroes and of law enforcement officers across the country. Locally, eight heroes have died protecting Faulkner County. These include four representatives of the Faulkner County Sheriff's Office and four representatives of Conway Police Department.

Today, Friday, May 15, 2026, at 4:30pm, law enforcement from surrounding departments will come together at Simon Park to honor these heroes and lay a single rose in memory of each of them. Today, on Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pause to remember their service and sacrifice, and we pray for the family members they left behind.

Fallen Heroes from Faulkner County Sheriff's Office:

•Deputy Oscar L. Honea was killed by gunfire on October 22, 1914.
•Deputy William E. Hathaway was killed by gunfire on August 5, 1931.
•Investigator Jimmy Wooley died on August 5, 2003, as a result of a fall while investigating a theft.
•Deputy Hans Fifer died on April 8, 2013, after suffering from a medical event during a SWAT training.

Fallen Heroes from Conway Police Department:

•Patrolman Robert W. "Bob" Martin was killed by gunfire on March 24, 1981.
•Patrolman Barry Kent McDaniel was killed by vehicular assault on April 2, 1982.
•Officer Lawrence Ray Noblitt was killed by gunfire on November 7, 1988.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. As a result, this week, May 10, 2026, through May 16, 2026, is recognized as National Police Week. National Police Week offers honor, remembrance, and peer support, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
