Recently posts on various social media platforms related to the “Cat in the Hat” hoax threat have negatively impacted many communities in our state. We have been working with our area schools and other law enforcement agencies to help ensure our students’ safety. Oklahoma’s Antiterrorism Act defines these hoaxes as acts of terrorism and prescribes harsh penalties, so parents, please visit with your students to ensure they aren’t perpetuating something that could get them into trouble. If we treat each other with kindness and eat our green eggs and ham, we will all be much better for it.

Chief Sweger promotes Officer Quinlan to Sergeant.

After an arduous process, Officer Quinlan was chosen to assume the role of Patrol Sergeant. This first line supervisor position sets the culture, enforces the standards, and protects the integrity of their shift. The Guthrie Police Department has not had a female supervisor since 2004, and we are proud that Officer Quinlan chose to advance into a leadership role.

Recently one of our officers cited this driver for reckless driving. Reckless driving occurs when someone operates a vehicle in a careless or wanton manner without regard for the safety of persons or property. In this case, the vehicle was traveling in excess of 120mph with other traffic present, but reckless driving can occur without high speed, such as carelessly passing a school bus with red lights activated, racing another driver, or performing a burn out in a parking lot. Reckless driving carries a stiff fine and possible jail time, and the penalty is doubled for second and subsequent offenses.

Please remember reckless driving puts you, your passengers, and others in danger. Now that school is back in session, let’s all be more vigilant in doing our part to make driving in Guthrie safer.

Guthrie Public Schools start classes this Thursday morning! Kids will be walking, riding, skipping, dancing, stumbling, sleepwalking, and our older ones will be driving to school. So, we have compiled a list of survival techniques for you:
1. Leave a lot earlier if possible. There's always more traffic for the first few days of school.
2. Slow down and expect an I-35 single-lane, construction zone type atmosphere. Then, if it doesn't happen, you'll be pleasantly surprised!
3. Watch out for the littles because they may not be watching out for you. This especially includes crossing Noble near Cotteral (19th Street), Central (Noble at Broad and Ash Streets), and Walnut (from Noble to Hillcrest).
4. Bring a stress ball or a sturdy stick to bite on. That always helps.

Join us in wishing a happy retirement to Lt. Mike Loya!

Lt. Mike Loya is retiring from the Guthrie Police Department after 24 years of service to the Guthrie Community.

Lt. Loya began his Law Enforcement career with Guthrie in April 2002. Lt. Loya prioritized and committed to mentoring and teaching throughout his career. He was promoted through the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant. Lt. Loya served on the Logan County Special Response Team for 22 years, with 11 of them as Team Commander. He was a member of the Police Department Bike Team, as well as the Day Shift Patrol commander. Lt. Loya was also responsible for the FTO program, the Training Coordinator, and the Use of Force Coordinator. Lt. Loya is well known throughout the entire state as an elite Defensive Tactics Instructor, teaching various CLEET Basic academies, OSU/OKC COPS programs, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Enid Police Department and Metro Tech academies, plus numerous reserve academies throughout the past two decades.

Before his Law Enforcement career Lt. Loya retired as a Senior Chief after serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy. In the Navy Lt. Loya was part of the highly trained and disciplined Special Warfare Combat Crewman (SWCC).

From all of us at the Guthrie Police Department we want to thank Lt. Mike Loya and his wife of 44 years, Kathy, for their service and sacrifice to our Country, and our Community.

We wish you well in the next chapter of your life.
