The volunteer fire service continues to face staffing shortages, even as call volumes skyrocket.

Busy morning

03/30/2026

This morning at 1:50am Killingsworth Cove was dispatched to a fire in the woods. A large pile of landscaping debris (all organic materials) was on fire. Due to the high winds and heat the fire was spreading north and west towards the Sod Farm. With assistance from Central Fire/Ems, Moores Mill VFD, Gurley Fire & Rescue, Keel Mountain VFD, Monrovia VFD, and Alabama Forestry Commission, Wildfire response units, the fire is contained at this time. Also assisting on scene was the Madison County Commission District 3, Madison County Sheriff's Office, and Gurley Police Department.

Residents should be aware that this fire cannot be extinguished and will continue to burn for days or even weeks and to expect smoke and the smell or burning to linger in the area. Please call 911 if you believe the fire has broken containment or is spreading.
