She Alerted on a School Bus. Nobody Believed Her. She Was Right.

She alerted on a school bus.

Forty-three children inside.

The officer cleared it.

She alerted again.

He cleared it again.

She sat down in front of the door and refused to move.

K-9 Echo was not a dog who argued with her handler.

She was a dog who had DECIDED — completely, permanently, without reservation —

that forty-three children were not getting back on that bus

until someone looked harder.

She had been wrong before.

False alerts happen. It's documented. It's accepted.

This was not that.

She was a German Shepherd with the Memphis Police Department.

Her handler was Officer Calvin Bridges.

They had worked together for five years.

She had a 94% accuracy rate — the highest in the department.

On a Tuesday morning in March 2019 —

a routine school bus stop check on a Memphis elementary school route —

Echo alerted at the rear storage compartment.

Officer Bridges cleared it. Nothing visible.

Echo alerted again. Sat. Would not move.

Bridges radioed for a second check.

The bus driver said the compartment was empty.

Had always been empty.

Echo sat in front of the door.

She had never done this before.

In five years — she had never sat in front of a door.

Bridges trusted the five years more than the visual check.

He pulled the driver out.

He pulled every child off the bus.

Forty-three children. Standing on the sidewalk.

He opened the rear compartment fully.

Behind a false panel — built into the original structure of the bus —

eleven kilograms of methamphetamine.

Packed tightly. Sealed. Odor-suppressed with industrial compound.

That compound had reduced the scent by an estimated 80%.

Echo had found it anyway.

With 20% of what she normally worked with.

Through a false wall.

While a school bus full of children waited to board.

Nobody had believed her the first time.

Or the second time.

She sat down anyway.

Because sitting down was the only language she had

for something this important.

Officer Bridges testified at the subsequent trial.

He was asked why he pulled the children off the bus.

"Because she sat down," he said.

"In five years — she had never sat down like that.

I trust my dog.

I will always trust my dog.

She's never given me a reason not to."

The bus driver was convicted.

The trafficking network connected to the shipment was dismantled over the following year —

fourteen arrests, seven convictions.

Echo received the department's Distinguished Service Award.

She stood on the podium.

She was given a treat.

She ate it.

She looked at Bridges.

She was ready to go back to work.

K-9 Echo. Memphis Police Department.

They cleared the bus twice. She sat down twice.

Forty-three children went home that afternoon.

Some dogs bark. Echo just sat.

That was enough.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gibson family and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office as we mourn the loss of Deputy Sheriff Adam Gibson and K9 Riley as they were shot and killed in the parking lot of the Cal Expo and State Fair facility following a vehicle pursuit of a parolee.

Deputies noticed the subject and vehicle, which matched the description of one used in a recent burglary series, in a parking lot near Arden Way and Avondale Avenue. The deputies contacted the occupant and learned that he was on active parole. As they prepared to search the vehicle the man fled, leading deputies on a pursuit.

The vehicle became disabled when it entered the state fair parking lot at 1600 Exposition Boulevard and the man remained inside. Deputies used a bean bag round to break out the vehicle's back window so they could see inside. K9 Riley was then deployed through the window by his handler in an attempt to apprehend the subject. When K9 Riley was inside of the vehicle the man opened fire, fatally wounding both K9 Riley and Deputy Gibson. A second deputy was also shot and wounded.

Other deputies on scene returned fire and killed the subject.

Deputy Gibson was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department for six years. He is survived by his wife and 9-month-old child.

On Monday afternoon, off-duty Edgewater Police Officer David Jewell picked up his father-in-law from the hospital and was driving him home. David decided to stop off at a gas station nearby his house in Ormand-by-the-Sea, Florida to get his father something to eat. Once he entered the store, one of the employees walked outside to his own vehicle, retrieved a gun and went back in. It was a firearm that he just picked up from the gun store two hours earlier.

According to charging documents, without saying a word, the clerk shot the off-duty officer in the head multiple times at point blank range. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood described it as a “targeted assassination”, stating the gunman went on to shoot Officer Jewell a total of 24 times as he laid on the floor; even reloading in between. The male fled the store on foot before responding officers took him into custody. He has since been charged with first-degree murder. During his confession, David’s killer told investigators that he did it because he was “having a bad day on his drive into work”.

Officer David Jewell joined the Edgewater Police Department in June of 2023. He previously served both the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office in their Communications Unit and Lake Helen PD. David was remembered as a truly a great police officer and an even better person. He was the individual that would smile every morning, and always went above and beyond for his community. Officer Jewell leaves behind a loving wife and a teenage son.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected and sudden passing of active ALEA K-9 Matyko. On Tuesday, Aug. 12, K-9 Matyko suffered a medical emergency and passed away while being transported by his handler to a veterinary hospital in Huntsville. He was 7 years old.

K-9 Matyko began his distinguished service with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division in 2019. Throughout his career, he served in several regions of the state, first in the Gadsden area, later in Montgomery, and most recently in the Decatur/Huntsville area. Over the years he provided vital support to law enforcement operations across northern and central Alabama.

“Matyko was more than a highly trained working dog, he was a trusted partner and valued member of the ALEA family,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. “He not only contributed to countless successful operations, but he also built strong partnerships with local law enforcement agencies in every community he served. We are grateful for his years of service to our Agency and the citizens of Alabama.”

While on duty, Matyko played an instrumental role in narcotics detection and interdiction efforts, assisting both ALEA and local law enforcement agencies in keeping dangerous drugs and fi****ms off Alabama’s roadways.

Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety (DPS), expressed his sincere condolences, stating, “K-9 Matyko’s commitment and courage were second to none. He stood side by side with our Troopers on the front lines, making a real difference in the fight against illegal narcotics. Losing a K-9 partner is devastating, and we honor his service and sacrifice.”

This heartbreaking loss follows the recent passing of retired ALEA K-9 Pici on Aug. 2, who lost her battle with bone cancer. Both K-9s leave behind a proud legacy of service and dedication to protecting the citizens of Alabama.
