USO Piano

One of the most important aspects of our upcoming USO exhibit is the piano. This yamaha type of piano and others similar to it was played in various USO clubs across the country. Pianos were used not just to play good music but also provide a relaxing atmosphere for the soldiers who came. When visitors come by the exhibit, they can play a few notes on the piano if they like. Of course we do ask them to be gentle with it. Any experienced piano player who visits is free to a play a song of thier own, as along as it's appropriate. Come by and see the piano once the exhibit opens. It'll be a fun experience.

Volunteers Needed

The Aviation Heritage Museum is in need of volunteers to help continue the development of our museum.

Some of the duties may include:
- Giving information to the public
- Giving Tours of the museum
- General maintenance of the museum
- Assist building and repairing aircraft
- Working with drone soccer groups
- Teaching students during our Summer Camps (June/July)
- Research of Aviation History on the Gulf Coast
- Outreach to local events

Museum Hours Thu-Sat 10 AM- 5 PM; Sun 12:30 - 5 PM

Volunteers can set their own hours or days they would like to work.

Photo Wall

Here in our upcoming USO exhibit (thanks to a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council) we have a large collection of pictures hanging on almost all the walls. The pictures depict the different USO clubs in Mississippi; they also show various men and women having a good time at these clubs. When looking at the pictures you can feel the fun these soldiers and civilians were having away from the war. After all that was the whole purpose of the USO clubs. Come by and see these pictures for yourself. You'll get a simulation of USO fun and feel like you're at these clubs in the 40s.

Little Bill

The first plane visitors see when they walk into the museum. This plane is one of the most interesting planes in the museum. Known as "Little Bill", it is the only miniature 403 D Wing plane in the world. It was graciously donated by people who work in sheet metal. It is a fun attraction for the kids, where they can sit inside and pretend they are the passengers or the pilot. It even comes with a little slide to. We use this plane for parades, most notably the Mardi Gras Parade. There we throw hundreds of paper planes into the crowd. Come by and see "Little Bill" for yourself. This plane has a fascinating story that you will want to know more about.

STEM Area Pianos.

Here in the STEM area, we have two piano mats that the kids can play with. Kids can tap their feet on these floor pianos and play thier own type of music. These pianos also have buttons that when pressed play a beat, so kids can make thier own music while playing along with other music. It's fun for them and adults to. Come by and give it a shot. It's not often you to play a piano with your feet.

USO Voice Recorders

Here in the upcoming USO exhibit we have a home recorder. During the Second World War, USO clubs had booths where soldiers could record thier own messages and send them to thier families. The audio was placed onto cardboard coated in wax and discs made from aluminum. Today, we can record messages home on our phones and computers. But in the 1940s, this was one of the best methods for soldiers to send a message home. This is an interesting take not just on USO history but also a history in communications.
