Five things I’ve learned in the last five years:
1. Tomorrow is never promised, so pick up the phone when it rings, take the trip, do the thing.
2. People do care. Find that person or that group and share what you are going through.
3. Recovery is possible! Take advantage of the resources that are out there. Keep searching until you find someone who can direct you to what you need.
4. The hole in your heart never heals, but with time and purpose you can fill it with something that will make it less raw.
5. Most importantly, God is a good God! God has never left us. God surrounded us with people that we have needed, long before we knew we had a need. God has given us a purpose that we never expected. God has drawn us closer to Him and has surrounded us with Himself every step of the way.
Five years ago today, we got “The phone call”. Five years ago today, we walked into “That hospital room.” Five years ago today, we prepared to make “Those decisions.” Five years ago today, we prayed “Those prayers.” And five years ago today, we started the vigil that ended 48 hours later in tearful devastation. Even so, we did not walk out of that hospital room on May 29, 2021, sharing a story of loss. We still do not talk about the “loss” of our son. We know where our son went on that day, and so we share our story by talking about the goodness of our God!
