Shout out to Lieutenant Bernier and Officer Harkins, who went “Over the Edge” on Friday at Mohegan Sun’s Sky Tower to support and raise money for Special Olympics Connecticut.

This experience takes fundraising to new heights and involves participants repelling more than 30 stories down the side of the tower. Their efforts raise money to fund year-round sports and health and fitness programs for Special Olympics CT athletes across the state.

We thank Lt. Bernier and Officer Harkins for representing our department in this cool (and slightly scary) event, and to the more than eight other police departments from around CT who also participated. We continue to be inspired every day by the amazing heart and talent of the Special Olympics CT athletes and their families. 💙

Be on the lookout for the next opportunity to support Guilford PD and Special Olympics CT at our annual Tip-A-Cop event coming up on November 10th! 👮‍♂️👮

About 32 people in the United States die every day in drunk-driving crashes. That’s one person every 44 minutes. About 30% of all traffic fatalities involve an alcohol-impaired driver. During the Labor Day holiday period, there is typically an increase in drunk-driving deaths. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which runs from August 13th to September 1st, aims to educate people about the dangers and consequences of driving drunk. Additionally, drug-impaired driving is just as dangerous as drunk-driving. Driving high puts you, your passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers in danger. So remember, whether you’re driving, riding, or hosting, always have a plan to make sure everyone gets home safe!

🚕 Before drinking, plan a safe and sober ride home.
🚙 Don’t let someone get behind the wheel if they’ve been drinking or using impairing substances. Take their keys and help them arrange a sober ride home.
🏠 If you’re hosting a gathering, make sure all your guests have a sober ride home.
📞 If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 911.
🚘 Always wear your seatbelt. It’s your best defense against impaired drivers.
💨 If you’ve smoked or ingested an impairing substance like ma*****na, do not drive.
💊 Some prescription and even over-the-counter medications can cause drowsiness, blurred vision, or slowed reaction time and impair driving. Make sure to check medication labels for these warnings before getting behind the wheel.

Route 146 connects Guilford to Branford, and, with its winding roads and tidal views, is arguably one of the most scenic routes in town. From the historic homes to the wildlife habitats, this is definitely a road you’ll want to take your time driving down.

That’s why Lieutenant Bernier and Assistant Fire Chief Considine want to remind you that speeding not only puts you at risk, but also walkers, bikers, and your fellow drivers who are out enjoying our beautiful shoreline community.

So whether you’re a Guilford resident or just passing through, please, slow down, and enjoy our town! 👮‍♂️👨‍🚒🚓🚒

Thank you to Assistant Chief Considine and the Guilford Fire Department for collaborating with us on this important message, and for all you do in helping keep our community safe! 🚒

Hey Guilford, this month we’re going to talk about Check Overpayment Scams! 💵💰

The idea of someone sending you “extra money” for an item you’re selling sounds pretty nice. But unfortunately, this type of scam is anything but nice... Check Overpayment Scams often target people selling items on online marketplaces (Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp), people seeking remote employment, or independent contractors.

💰How the Scam Works💰

1️⃣ The Setup: A “buyer” or new “employer” contacts you, interested in purchasing an item you’re selling or hiring you for a remote job. They insist on paying by check and send you a check for significantly more than the item’s price or your agreed-upon upfront pay.

2️⃣ The Excuse: When you point out the mistake, they claim their accountant or payroll manager messed up. They may tell you to use some of that extra money to pay for expenses related to the sale or purchase home office equipment.

3️⃣ The Trap: They ask you to deposit the check and wire or send the “extra” money back via a payment app (Zelle, CashApp), wire transfer, or gift cards. You deposit the check into your bank account, and it appears to clear.

4️⃣ The Loss: While federal rules require banks to make funds from deposited checks available in days, it can take weeks for a check to fully clear and for the issuing bank to determine a check is fraudulent. Once the bank catches the fake check, the deposit is reversed. Because you already sent your own cash back to the scammer, you lose that money out of pocket.

🔒How to Protect Yourself🔒

🚫 Never accept a check for more than the agreed-upon amount. If it’s too much, send it back immediately.

🚫Never wire or return money via gift cards or payment apps as a “refund” for a check deposit.
