🏈 THROWBACK THURSDAY! 🏈

This Monday, September 21st, marks the 70th anniversary of the very first home game ever played on the historic varsity football field located behind Groveport-Madison Middle School Central! Both the field and the school originally opened in September 1956, serving as the high school campus at the time.

🐴 As the oldest Cruiser football field still in active use, this ground holds generations of local sports history. From Cruiser Varsity, Reserve/JV, and Freshman squads to Middle School, Youth Leagues, gym classes, and snowy neighborhood pick-up games, so many levels of football have been played here. You can even feel the legendary horse, Cruiser's presence here since this was he and John Rarey's home and pasture site.

Back when this field first opened in '56, the Cruisers were competing in the old Franklin County League before transitioning into the Mid-8 League in '58. The varsity team moved to their current S. Hamilton Rd home in the late 60's and joined the OCC in '74.

Fun Field Facts:
🌭 The Concession Stands: The field once featured two popular concession spots. One in the northeast corner (still exists) and a mobile stand on the west end that has long been gone.
📣 The Atmosphere: For years, bleachers lined both sides under bright stadium lights (which remained until the early 2000s). The field felt incredibly private, sitting below street level and hidden on three sides by trees and a perimeter fence that used to be covered in thick, Wrigley Field-style ivy/vines.
🛑 The Scoreboard Storm: The original massive Longines scoreboard on the west end was heavily bent during a severe storm in the 1980s and had to be dismantled. It was briefly replaced by a smaller board before the permanent one moved to the southeast corner.
🚗 Overflow Parking: During the peak Varsity days, crowds were so massive that the adjacent baseball outfield had to be opened up just to handle the extra vehicles!

The heavy Friday night lights and massive varsity crowds may be history, but 70 years later, this field is doing exactly what it was built to do...shaping the next generation of local athletes. 🔴⚫️

⚠️ Attention Drivers: As part of ODOT's major U.S. 33 Widening Project, additional permanent traffic pattern changes are taking effect.

▪ What’s changing: Crews will be closing left-turn access from U.S. 33 to Bixby Road starting on or around October 2. Access at this intersection will transition to a permanent right-in, right-out configuration.

▪ The Big Picture: This change is part of a larger initiative to widen U.S. 33 from two to three lanes in each direction between State Route 104 and Diley Road. To keep costs and disruptions low, the highway is being widened using the inside shoulder, requiring minimal to no new right-of-way.

The overall upgrade is being managed across three distinct phase sections:
▪ Section 1: U.S. 33 between SR 104 and I‑270
▪ Section 2: U.S. 33 between I‑270 and Gender Road
▪ Section 3: U.S. 33 between Gender Road and Diley Road

🚧 Driver Advisory: ODOT has deployed message boards in the area. Please stay alert, and plan your alternate routes ahead of time.

This morning, our community gathered for the annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony to mark 25 years since that fateful day.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Motts Military Museum, Inc for hosting us, and to the Madison Twp. Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 2507 Department for their dedication to organizing this ceremony every year. To our community members who attended, and the guest speakers (pictured) who shared their powerful firsthand stories with us today, thank you for ensuring we never forget.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to pause and honor the brave heroes who answered the call on September 11, 2001. Their memory lives on in our community. 🇺🇸

THROWBACK THURSDAY!!! 🚂⚡

👪 Ever notice those old metal tracks still embedded in the brick pavement on Blacklick Street? They are a cool reminder of how Groveport residents and mail used to travel a century ago!

Pictured here is the Scioto Valley Traction Line (SVTL) depot in Groveport, which sat on the northwest corner of Blacklick Street and Brook Alley in the early 20th century. The SVTL was an electric interurban railway operating from 1904 to about 1930.

📦 Take a close look at the lower-left corner: You can spot a historic barrow (or handcart), which station workers used to haul bulk items, like mail bags and heavier freight to and from the train.

Next time you walk or drive down Blacklick Street, safely look down at the road to see a piece of local transit history still waiting under your feet.
