🚨SCAM WARNING🚨 Unfortunately, our area has seen a rise in scams that are targeting the citizens of this great community. Below are some common scams that we have investigated in our county, and how to avoid being a victim.
1. SCAM CALLER SAYS YOU HAVE A WARRANT. Do not send money to anyone. Law Enforcement will never ask you to send money. Call your local law enforcement agency before doing anything.
2. SCAM CALLER TRIES TO EXTORT YOU FOR MONEY. They usually engage in online dating with victim, then either threaten to release photos or conversations to friends and family. Never send any money. Contact law enforcement and block all communication.
3. SCAM TEXT MESSAGE ABOUT AN UNAUTHORIZED CHARGE. The scammer will send you a text about a charge to your account. When you respond that you did not make the purchase, they will say they will have a fraud specialist contact you. The scam will lead to them asking you to withdraw a large sum of money or precious metals from the bank. They will tell you that they will have a "courier" pick up the money, gold, or silver to "be processed for DNA". CALL YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY IMMEDIATELY. Do not give them information or property.
4. SCAM INVOLVING HOUSE FOR RENT ON FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE OR OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA. They will make you feel rushed to put a deposit down or pay a fee to "hold" the item for sale. Never pay for anything until you see the item/home in person, can have a legitimate contract notarized in-person, or verify that the property is available to be sold/rented. In nearly every house rental scam that we investigate, the house is occupied by a renter or homeowner.
These are just a few of the scams that we see. To avoid scams in general, follow these steps:
NEVER SEND FUNDS THROUGH PREPAID CARDS, CASHAPP, VENMO, OR ANY DIGITAL WALLET IF YOU DO NOT PERSONALLY KNOW THE INDIVIDUAL AND HAVE NOT MET THEM IN-PERSON.
ONLY PAY GOVERMENT FEES AT THE PHYSICAL LOCATION OF THE APPROPRIATE GOVERNMENT BUILDING (I.E. THE COURTHOUSE, CITY HALL, ETC.).
IF YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE THE POTENTIAL VICTIM OF A SCAM, NOTIFY YOUR LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY. YOU ARE A VICTIM, AND YOU HAVE RIGHTS.
Please spread the word through our county, so we can minimize the affect that these scams have on our community. You've worked hard for your money. Let us help you protect it.
