💬 Talking to Kids about Alcohol and Other Drugs

Talking to kids about alcohol and other drugs can feel tough—but it’s one of the most important conversations you’ll have.
Research shows that strong, open relationships help kids make healthier choices. It’s never too early to start—conversations can begin as young as age 9.

Here are 5 simple goals to guide the discussion:

✅ Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse
✅ Show you care about your child's health, wellness, and success
✅ Show you're a good source of information
✅ Show you're paying attention and you'll discourage risky behaviors
✅ Build your child's skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use

Remember: this isn’t one big talk—it’s many small, honest conversations over time.

The Good Samaritan Law protects people who administer naloxone and call for help.

06/24/2026

One reason people decline being offered naloxone at the pharmacy when filling their pain medication prescription is because they don't want anyone to think/assume they are at risk for overdose. There is still stigma about what it means to HAVE naloxone. Many pharmacies have an automatic prompt on their computer prompting the offer of naloxone as well as offering a disposal kit with any opioid pain medication they dispense. It's not a judgement on you, it's policy.

06/24/2026

One of the top reasons people hesitate about obtaining naloxone is that they "don't think they need it". While you may not have an opioid prescription or an opioid use disorder, it doesn't mean you won't encounter someone who is experiencing an opioid overdose. It can happen anywhere, to anyone.
