Ledge Light was built in 1909 and has been guiding ships at the mouth of the Thames River ever since. It’s also known as the home of Ernie the ghost, a generally friendly presence of dubious origins. Depending on who you ask, Ernie was a lighthouse keeper, a Coast Guardsman or a ship’s captain who died at the lighthouse in one of half-a-dozen different ways. Happy birthday, Mother Bailey! Born in Groton on October 11, 1758, Anna Warner “Mother” Bailey became a legendary American figure for her actions during the War of 1812. In the summer of 1813, as Groton and New London faced attacks by British naval forces in Long Island Sound, Mother Bailey learned that the Groton soldiers were facing a shortage of wadding for their guns. In response, she removed her flannel petticoat on the spot and donated it to the cause. The story received national attention in the years following the war and numerous admirers, including three U.S. Presidents, came to call on Mother Bailey in her home at 108 Thames St., Groton (pictured here in 1982).
