Groton Long Point and Noank FDs Friday night sponsored a Search and Rescue (SAR) exercise in Fisher's Island Sound. Eight organizations participated either at sea or inport to exercise the Marine Group Region 4 Incident Command Post and rapid search assignment procedures.

When most people call 911 for a fire, car crash, or medical emergency, they assume a paid fire department is responding.
In much of Connecticut, that’s not the case.
By the numbers:
• Connecticut has lost approximately 63% of its volunteer firefighters since 2017, dropping from more than 22,000 volunteers to about 8,300.
• 88 of Connecticut’s 169 municipalities rely entirely on volunteer fire departments for fire protection.
• More than 60% of Connecticut fire departments are volunteer-based.
• Several volunteer departments have recently closed, merged, or reduced operations because they could no longer maintain staffing levels.
Officials cite changing work schedules, longer commutes, increased training requirements, health risks, and difficulties recruiting younger volunteers as major factors behind the decline.
👀 Why We’re Watching
This isn’t just a firefighter issue.
It’s a public safety issue.
Many Connecticut communities depend on volunteers to respond when homes catch fire, serious crashes occur, or medical emergencies happen.
As volunteer ranks continue shrinking, towns may face difficult decisions about consolidating departments, hiring paid staff, increasing taxes, or accepting longer response times.
Most residents don’t think about who’s showing up when they dial 911.
But Connecticut’s volunteer firefighter shortage is forcing many communities to ask that question.
Question: Would you volunteer as a firefighter if training, tuition assistance, or tax incentives were offered?
