Wayback in 1954–

Back when your first pension check came with a handshake.

In this moment, a Hall County officer receives his first pension check after more than 30 years of service—from John Ham, an early Secretary-Treasurer of POAB.

Things look a little different today,
but our commitment to our members remains the same.

This is one of the biggest questions we’ve been hearing:

Does SB 285 increase benefits right now?

Short answer—no. But here’s what it does do:

SB 285 sets up a new source of funding by directing a portion of insurance premium taxes to the Fund.

That funding helps strengthen the Fund over time and support future improvements.

The next step is the Governor’s decision, and we’ll share updates as soon as that happens.

This didn’t happen by accident—your support, your messages, and your engagement made a difference.

SB 285 has passed both the House and Senate and is now headed to the Governor.

For years, members have asked how we can strengthen benefits long-term—this is one of the biggest steps in that direction.

We appreciate the many members who have taken the time to communicate with legislators in a respectful and constructive way. Your engagement continues to make a meaningful impact.

Executive Director Homer Bryson shared the following update regarding the POAB legislative effort:

- Legislative Update -
I want to thank everyone for your efforts in contacting legislators this session regarding the POAB bill. It is not getting out this session, but your work has generated a lot of interest and has brought us to the decision to drop a new bill in the House this year. It’s being dropped this session so an actuarial analysis can be completed over the summer in preparation for the next session.

This bill has the potential to be more beneficial to our members in the long run. In fact, it could possibly raise COLAs at a faster rate than envisioned by the current bill.

Please thank the legislators that supported us and keep your energy up because we will need your help again in the future.

Senate Bill 285 (SB 285), legislation that could significantly strengthen the long-term funding of the POAB, has successfully advanced through the GA Senate and has now been assigned to the House Ways & Means Committee.

We appreciate the many members and supporters who have already contacted their legislators regarding this important measure.

As the bill moves forward in the House, we encourage members of the law enforcement community and supporters of the Fund to contact both their State Representative and members of the House Ways & Means Committee to express support for SB 285.
