It was a great morning at the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce State of the City event!

We had the opportunity to hear from Superintendent Travis Lightle, Maureen Larsen with the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, and our very own Mayor Mike Evans. Attendees got an inside look at Gretna’s continued momentum, including community growth, school district updates, and exciting enhancements happening across the city and surrounding areas.

Thank you to the Chamber for hosting another fantastic event!

Fun Fact Friday! 🌳

Arbor Day was founded right here in Nebraska in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton. At the time, much of the state was open prairie with very few trees, so Morton encouraged residents to plant trees for shade, wind protection, and building materials.

On the very first Arbor Day, Nebraskans planted an estimated 1 million trees in a single day!

Because of its success, Arbor Day quickly spread across the country and is now celebrated nationwide. Nebraska still celebrates it on the last Friday in April to kick off tree planting season - and right here in Gretna, the Tree Board recently hosted their Arbor Day celebration at Falling Waters Elementary School!

Pretty cool to think a national tradition started right here in Nebraska!

🏆 2026 Engineering Excellence Merit Award

JEO Consulting Group - Capehart Road Reconstruction and Construction Services

The City of Gretna partnered with JEO Consulting Group to provide engineering design services for Capehart Road between U.S. Highway 6 and the eastern edge of Gretna Crossing Park (GXP). This roadway serves as a key access point supporting the park.

In addition to design, JEO provided construction administration and observation for the GXP-supported portion of the project, as well as for an adjacent segment constructed concurrently by Sarpy County. The county’s portion, designed by Lamp Rynearson, supports new residential development in the area.

Congratulations to everyone involved in these projects! We are proud of the continued growth and collaboration happening in Gretna.
