Some very important visitors have arrived in Greer for one of their annual stops, and our team is here to make sure their stay is nice and cozy.

Each year, monarch butterflies fly through Greer during their spring and fall migration seasons. The females lay eggs on milkweed plants in our pollinator gardens. In the wild, only 1 in 100 eggs survive through the lifecycle to become adult butterflies. That’s why the city’s recreation staff collects the eggs and protects them as they mature. The team hosts butterfly release events in our parks to help educate the community about these endangered creatures. Keep an eye on our social media feeds for info on the next event!

Fun fact: Greer was the first community in South Carolina to be designated as Monarch City USA – a national initiative committed to rebuilding the butterfly’s natural habitat which supports them on their annual migration.

A group that’s already booked several tournaments for 2027 got a behind-the-scenes look at the site of the Prisma Health Performance Center this week.

The CEO and staffers from Palmetto Region Volleyball toured the property off S. Highway 14 where the 200K square foot facility is currently under construction.

The Prisma Health Performance Center is set to open in early 2027. The new hub for recreation in the City of Greer will have 18 volleyball courts, nine basketball courts, a championship gym, a wrestling room, event rental space, a fitness center, an indoor walking track, and a café.

The City of Greer is getting a new mural, and the cultural arts team recently hosted a painting project to give folks a sneak peek at the design.

Artist Adam Schrimmer from Blank Canvas Mural Company called the project a “Paint-by-Dot” activity. The mayor, members of City Council, and some downtown business leaders worked on the 16 x 4-foot replica of the mural going up on the side of The Great Bay Oyster House building at Main and Poinsett Streets.

Pedestrian safety notice:

Please exercise caution when using the crosswalk on E. Poinsett Street between Cannon and Depot Streets at the entrance of Greer City Park.

The warning lights that blink when someone is crossing the street are not working. Our team is waiting on a new part to get the lights fixed. They hope to have them back online by mid-week next week.
