☁️ What is a shelf cloud?

• A long, wedge-shaped cloud along the leading edge of a thunderstorm
• Forms as cool outflow pushes underneath warm, moist air
• Can look ominous, but is typically associated with strong straight-line winds, not tornadoes

🌪️ Tornado or Look-Alike?

Today we're kicking off a new series highlighting cloud features that can look like tornadoes—but aren't! Stick around over the next couple of days to learn more about tornado look-alikes.

First, what is a tornado?

🌪️ A violently rotating column of air extending from the cloud base of a thunderstorm to the ground.

Our first look-alike: Wall Clouds!

☁️ What is a wall cloud?

A localized lowering beneath the rain-free base of a thunderstorm.

Forms near the storm's strong updraft and may rotate.

A wall cloud isn't a tornado, but persistent, strong rotation can be a sign that a tornado may develop.

When in doubt, don't rely on appearance alone. Always take Tornado Warnings seriously and seek shelter when warned.
