A National Day of Mourning is being observed today to honor former President George H.W. Bush. President Donald Trump declared Dec. 5, 2018 a day of mourning for Bush 41, who died last Friday at the age of 94. George Herbert Walker Bush (1924-2018), served as the 41st U.S. president from 1989 to 1993. He also was a two-term U.S. vice president under Ronald Reagan, from 1981 to 1989. Bush is a military veteran, who enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday and became one of the youngest pilots to receive his wings.

Today in South Carolina Army National Guard History

November 27, 1951
Private Loater Loyd McKinney of Company F, 118th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, dies in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Accompanying two comrades, Private McKinney attacked with hand grenades an enemy machine-gun stronghold, containing at least 40 Germans and four machine guns, and forced the enemy to surrender.

Private McKinney was presented the Distinguished Service Cross on July 9, 1919 for extraordinary heroism in action while serving near Montbrehain, France, October 8, 1918 when he was just 17 years old.
