Realistic expectations: K9 CPR is effective less than 1 out of every 10 times.

I have never successfully resuscitated a dog in the field once I have had to start compressions.

Unconscious & non-ambulatory working dog patients do not have great survival rates.

Train & try anyway, your dog is worth it.

Backstory: Per FOX 4 News Dallas Fort Worth, Cleburne Police confirmed that one of their officers was shot near a Sam’s Club in Burleson after police pursued an individual who had been brandishing a firearm.

The individual was shot and killed during the incident. The Cleburne officer was shot in the leg and transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Thoughts: First and foremost, we know all the Internet superheroes are going to jump on the fact that the responding officer is not wearing gloves.

While PPE should always be the goal in the real world, when treating teammates, friends, or family member those rules often go out the window.

Additionally, many law-enforcement agencies issue officers a tourniquet with little or no additional medical equipment. Obviously, this limits not only their scope of potential care, but also whether they even have appropriate PPE available.

That brings us to our next point: while any GSW to an extremity requires medical evaluation, not every extremity GSW requires a tourniquet. In this case, we don’t have visualization of the injury, so no definitive opinion can be made about the appropriate intervention. But remember: a tourniquet is indicated for life-threatening extremity hemorrhage, not simply because a gunshot wound is present.

Once again, many law-enforcement officers have little medical training or equipment beyond a tourniquet. Their options when faced with an extremity injury are therefore extremely limited.

Bottom line: These officers did an incredible job responding calmly and providing care and comfort to their wounded fellow officer. They should be commended for their efforts—not criticized for what they did or did not do in a complex situation.

In our opinion, law enforcement needs to be better equipped and better trained to provide appropriate medical care at the point of injury, where they are often the first people on scene.

Some may argue that providing medical care is not “their job.” But when the ability to save someone’s life—including your own—is within reach, it makes a whole lot of common sense.
