It’s been nearly 18 months since Sonny Cox stepped into his role as Greenwood County coroner last year. And in his first year on the job, the longtime law-enforcement official embraced his new role, helping to navigate the county through one of its deadliest spans ever.
The poise he showed through his rookie year was not lost on his colleagues across the state.
Cox was named the state’s Coroner of the Year during the South Carolina Coroner’s Association’s annual conference last week at the Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort in Pawleys Island.
“I’m humbled by the award, but I’m honored to be able to serve the people of Greenwood County,” he said. “I never expected this, especially not my first year of being coroner. That’s why I’m so humbled to receive it and honored. We feel like we’re taking the coroner’s office to a whole new level -- and that’s not to say anything bad about the old administration. But I never thought we’d reach this level so quickly.”
Cox won the honor Wednesday evening during a ceremony on the second night of the four-day conference, which has been taking place for at least the past 20 years. He beat out two other nominees to earn the accolade. Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger, the Coroner’s Association president, presented Cox the plaque, calling him a “young gun” in the landscape of the state’s death investigators.
