Greenwood Post Office(GPO) Alert
By now, you are all aware that the Greenwood Post Office(GPO) was subjected to a two hour reduction in hours of operation (currently 9a.m. - 4p.m./closed 1:30-2:30 for lunch) as a result of actions this past Spring by the United States Postal Service(USPS) known as POSTPLAN. Prior to the implementation of these reduced hours, we were accustomed to having First Class Mail posted to P.O. Boxes by 10:00 a.m. and to Rural Delivery addresses by midday to early afternoon. Now the G.P.O. does not even open until 9:00 a.m. with first class mail typically not being posted until after midday and rural routes even later than that. Obviously, this delay in delivery is a direct result of the reduced hours.
When the reduced hours began this past Spring, the USPS indicated that the Greenwood Post Office(GPO) would be reviewed again next year in consideration for a further reduction in hours. We were told at the time that analysis of revenue/cash flow would be a significant factor in this reevaluation. The USPS Fiscal Year ends at the end of September. We have reason to believe that our cash flow has unavoidably declined with the reduced hours of operation and, by means of this UPDATE, we are urgently requesting that ALL friends of the Greenwood Post Office(GPO) advance any and all purchases of Postal products ASAP prior to the end of September. It is critically important that we actively support the GPO to demonstrate its value to our community.
Members of your Greenwood Citizens Council (G.C.C.) are planning to meet once again, in the near future, with the newly appointed Richmond District Manager for the USPS to reinforce our concerns about the negative effects of these reduced hours. Additionally, we will be meeting again with Congressman Robert Hurt who has been very sympathetic and understanding of our concerns.
