He was elected in November 2010, and sworn into office in January, 2011. Scott and his wife, Kristi, live in Denver with their five year old daughter, Sofia. A successful small businessman and attorney, Gessler serves as the chief executive of The Department of State. The Secretary of State’s office ensures the integrity of elections and helps commerce by collecting and managing a wide variety of business and public records. Before becoming Secretary of State, Gessler practiced election law, constitutional law, and commercial litigation. He has taught election law at both the University of Colorado and University of Denver Law Schools, and he has received wide recognition for his work in election law. Department of Justice, focusing on international criminal law and terrorism. As a small businessman he later managed a construction company. He also served as an Army Reservist for 16 years, including one overseas deployment. Scott received his undergraduate degree from Yale, law degree from University of Michigan, and MBA from Northwestern University.
