Move over. It's ! 🐢

Twelve turtle species (including 4 sea turtles) occur in Connecticut.

Snapping turtles are widespread in our state. Their ability to adapt to people and the state's changing landscape has made them evolutionarily successful.
Snapping turtles rarely leave their aquatic habitat except during the breeding season, at which time females travel great distances in search of a place to dig a nest and lay eggs. Some turtles have been found as far as a mile from the nearest water source.

This week, follow along with us (at slow and steady pace, of course) as we shell-e-brate these incredible, long-lived reptiles!

The upcoming lecture on Wednesday, May 27th at 7pm at the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center, will focus on large-scale action and community solutions with a panel discussion amongst local industry experts including; Matt Viens, Manager, Land Stewardship for the Greenwich Audubon Center, Eli Terris, Restoration Planning Project Manager at The Nature Conservancy, and Dr. Greg Kramer, Superintendent of Parks and Trees and Tree Warden for the Town of Greenwich. Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) Wildlife Highlights May 2026- included an article titled, "Young Wildlife: If You Care, Leave It There."

This is a great reminded that May is the time of year many nesting birds and wildlife are raising their young. While outside if you come across young wildlife please leave them alone. It is not uncommon for babies to be left alone for extended periods of time while the adults are out foraging for food.
